ERYKAH BADU - BIOGRAPHY- hip online
Erykah Badu fuses the jazz, RandB and hip-hop influences of a lifetime, and does so not only with her voice, but with many talents: writing, producing, directing, poetry, dance, drama, and visual art.
Badu's debut album, Baduizm (Kedar/Universal, 1997), was both a personal triumph and a landmark for RandB: entering the national album chart at No. 2, it was the highest debut of a new female artist to that date, and it heralded a talent that was fully-formed and mature, yet obviously destined to grow even more.
Badu's commanding on-screen presence, apparent from the first viewing of "On and On," was repeatedly confirmed by her subsequent acting roles: cameos on the daytime drama One Life To Live and Blues Brothers 2000, and especially her moving, honest work in The Cider House Rules.

When Weird Works: Outkast and Erykah Badu
Badu, James Poyser, Rashad (Ringo) Smith and RC Williams —; and returned from hibernation with "Worldwide Underground," which her record company is marketing, rather apologetically, as a 50-minute EP.
Badu seems just as convinced that love can be terrifying, and her album suggests that desire is a form of spirit possession.
Badu suggests that love is sorcery: when she intones, "I got the hazel eyes/ To make your nature rise," she seems to be casting a spell.

Badu and her large turban appeared out of nowhere in early 1997, on a murmuring, romantic album that trod the median between old-school soul and contemporary electronic R&B. Badu's songs, especially the hit "On & On" and the catchy "Certainly," recall Sade in their polished, subtle sexiness.
Erykah Badu was part of that neo-soul movement from the mid to late 90s that were trying to make REAL RandB rather than all the bad boy hip hop kinda mess that most acts were making.
Erykah Badu's debut album is loaded with old school jazz and modern randb that's as tighly woven as her famous mile-high headdress.

Erykah Badu: Baduizm ---Ink Blot Magazine
Erykah Badu (born Erica Wright) declared in high school that she no longer wished to addressed by her "slave name" and wished instead to be called Erykah, "kah" meaning "the inner-self which can do no wrong." Later, she inserted Badu because it was a sound she often made when she would sing to herself.
Later, she discovered it was an Arabic word meaning "to manifest truth and light." Badu, who started doing freestyle rap at age 14, dropped out a few credits shy of a degree from Grambling State University to pursue acting and singing.
Badu's smooth vocals with their hint of girlish squeal have a carefree yet weary quality.

 Erykah Badu
Dallas-born Erykah Badu is probably the foremost exponent of neo-soul, a form that seeks to revive the emotional delicacy and tunefulness of 70s artists like Roberta Flack and Marvin Gaye, fused with the sparseness, immediacy and hyperrealism of hip hop.
Badu has become better known for her eccentricities (yard-high turbans, naming her son Seven, etc.) than for her music, which isn't exactly unfair - if she weren't so eccentric her music probably wouldn't be as good - but shouldn't discourage you from checking her out.
A smash debut; Badu's brainstorm was combining modern R&B production with a jazz nightclub vibe: stand-up bass loops and piano abound, and her high, clear voice sounds something like Diana Ross imitating Billie Holiday.

In a tall tube turban, robed white and toting a shoulder sack, lighting, upon a coffee table, an incense candle cut in the shape of "the feminine principle," as she called it, Badu looked less like a funky fusion jazz singer than a holder of Swahili-language seances.
The liquid roll of the music, the lithe riffs of her bassist, and the architecture of her costume all brought to mind the image of Sade, an African-born imagist who like Badu owns a high-priestess-of-soul voice in a drop-dead body.
Especially Africa, as she stopped "On and On" to preach "Baduizm," which turned out to be a kind of Afrocentric new age, a portrait of Badu's self and good feelings.

Erykah Badu's exceptional debut disc, Baduizm, was the CD hip-hop heads played when they needed a break from music that was filled with materialism and macho posturing, or when they just needed that certain...groove.
From the opening whispers that are supposed to be the voices in her head, the listener is made to feel as if they stumbled onto the open diary of a woman who has poured her soul into the pages.
The CD concludes with the brilliant, heart-wrenching, three-part "Green Eyes" (featuring Roy Hargrove on trumpet), which was reportedly written just after the break-up of Badu and Andre 3000 (of Outkast), the father of her son Seven.

Erykah Badu - Biography - AOL Music
She grew up listening to '70s soul and '80s hip-hop, but Erykah Badu drew more comparisons to Billie Holiday upon her breakout in 1997, after the release of her first album, Baduizm.
The grooves and production on the album are bass-heavy R&B, but Badu's langurous, occasionally tortured vocals and delicate phrasing immediately removed her from the legion of cookie-cutter female R&B singers.
Born Erica Wright in Dallas in 1971, Badu attended a school of the arts and was working as a teacher and part-time singer in her hometown when she opened for D'Angelo at a 1994 show.
