Erzgebirge [Ger.,=ore mountains], Czech Krušné Hory, mountain range, along the Czech-German border, extending c.95 mi (150 km) from the Fichtelgebirge in the southwest to the Elbe River in the northeast.
The Erzgebirge has many famous mineral springs (notably at Karlovy Vary and Teplice-Šanov, in the Czech Republic) and is an important industrial area, particularly in the manufacture of chemicals, machinery, and textiles.
In 1938 the Czech part of the Erzgebirge was transferred to Germany by the Munich Pact.

 The invention and uses of folk art in Germany: wooden toys from the Erzgebirge mountains Folklore - Find Articles
This article attempts to historicise the concept of "folk art" using the example of wooden toys from the Erzgebirge mountains to show that it was invented by cultural elites as a marketing concept at the beginning of the twentieth century in order to support a domestic industy caught in structural crisis.
The toy industry of the Erzgebirge was a typical proto-industrial home industry based on the technologies of wood turning and carving.
If these figures are correct, this would mean that in 1933 Japan overtook the Erzgebirge in the export of wooden toys for the first time, the export value of the latter being an estimated RM 1.5 million (Zenker 1935, 189).

One cold February afternoon, as we were driving along a snowy country road deep in the Erzgebirge mountains of Germany, we saw a sign for "Schnitzkunst" (hand-carved art).
The attention to detail was amazing -- hand-carved figures, delightful animals, even the use of the rough bark from the tree from which the pyramid was made.
