Esat Digifone, a GSM mobile phone network which was the first competitor to Eircell (then an Eircom susbidary) was originally a joint venture between Esat Telecom and Telenor, however when Esat was sold to BT, the mobile division became part of BT Wireless, which was evenutally spun off as mmO2.
Esat Telecom applied a number of times for a telecommunications licence to the Department of Communications and was finally granted a limited one in March 1993.
All company names in the Esat BT Group were offically re-registered with the Companies Registration Office as BT in March 2005, and on 12 April, the company was offically rebranded as BT Ireland.

Esat BT parent, British Telecom, last year launched its Openzone business unit specifically to encourage Wi-Fi use and roll out and the company has already deployed services in 400 UK hotspots, with 4,000 set to be on-line by the end of 2004.
Morrissey said that Esat BT was eager to construct its own Wi-Fi phone boxes in Ireland, noting that there are 14 such sites in Northern Ireland, but said that since Esat BT sold its payphone business to Smart Telecom, it would need to finder a partner to launch the service.

The telecoms market was deregulated five years ago and ESAT BT says it wants to increase its market share which stands at 5%.

Esat BT has become the second ISP in Ireland to begin selling a limited flat-rate Internet product, readying users for a true flat-rate service next year.
NetSmart is the name for Esat BT's new flat-rate Web access service, which will let Irish Internet users log on to the Net at evenings and weekends for between 40 and 120 hours per month for a set fee.
Esat BT said that under its flat-rate plan, users will pay a monthly charge of between EUR25 and EUR35, comparable with rates in the UK.
