Currently, Esat Telecom's SDH network is based on Nortel Networks' STM-16 2.5 Gbit/s technology.
Esat Telecom will now deploy Nortel Networks D-WDM and STM-64 multiplexer, initially providing 20 Gbit/s, making it one of the highest capacity networks in Ireland.
Esat Telecom, Esat Net and BridgeCom Group employ 650 people and have offices in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford.

 RTÉ News: Lowry defends Esat/Telecom Éireann decision
The former Minister for Communications, Michael Lowry, has issued a statement on a report in a Sunday newspaper, which referred to a decision he made in 1996 in relation to Telecom Éireann and Esat Telecom.
Today's Sunday Tribune claimed Mr Lowry had personally instructed Telecom Éireann to assist Esat in providing voice telephony services to its corporate customers.
Mr Lowry in his statement confirmed this, but said that his decision was based on legal advice concerning a directive from the European Commission.
