		Four albums that are arguably the best of the Perry era have just been reissued and, in some cases, expanded.
		As aforementioned, "Escape" is the crown of Journey's studio output, with the band at its re-energized peak and not a duff song to be found.
		Of all the Journey albums in this recent batch, "Escape" is the must-have.

		For Journey, now in its eighth year as a working band, each new year and new album has brought change and increasing success.
		The most obvious sign of change on "Escape" is the presence of the newest member of Journey, keyboardist/guitarist/songwriter/vocalist Jonathan Cain, formerly of the Babys, Cain replaces charter member Gregg Rolie who has left to pursue a solo career.
		In Neal Schon's estimation, "Escape" is "really different - I think this album will appeal to a wider spectrum of fans." Judging by the remarkable reception it's gotten at both the radio and retail levels, that sounds like an understatement.

		Cain said the follow-up to "Escape," "Frontiers," might have been an even better album, but it was dismantled at the last minute; the superb "Only the Young" and "Ask the Lonely" were removed so they could appear on the "Visionquest" and "Two of a Kind" soundtracks.
		Journey’s “Escape” album is quintessential ’80s music at its best and worst — flirtatious in the way it suggests that it is the best thing you’ve ever heard, and representing the nadir in Bay Area rock music (at the time).
		Journey is still going strong, with many successful works since, but “Escape” was their most popular album, because almost every cut was a hit on the radio.

		Journey represents the absolute nadir of '70s rock: overproduced, insipid pap expressly constructed for and marketed to the lowest possible denominator and appeal to the kind of consumer who bought stone-washed jeans and Pontiac Firebirds.
		Journey was my first rock concert in 8th grade (1979), but that tour was for the Evolution album ("City of the Angels" "Lovin' touchin' Sqeezin'").
		I'm not the biggest Journey fan in the whole world by a long shot but "Lights" was (and still is) a song that speaks loudly to true Bay Area natives everywhere much like Tony Bennett's "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" did for several generations earlier and still does today.

		The third cut on this album, “Chain Reaction,” by Steve Perry, Neal Schon and Jon Cain, is my least favorite rocker on this album.

		In 1980, Journey rode its third release of the Perry era, Departure, to #8 on the album chart, coupled with a highly successful tour.
		Typical of album tours, the Escape show is jam-packed with material from the then-current recording, at the expense of superior songs from Journey's earlier repertoire (I especially missed "Feeling That Way" and "Anytime" from Infinity).
		Steve Perry, though never the most charismatic front man in rock history (he spends an inordinate amount of time in every number singing with his eyes closed, as though he's forgotten that there are thousands of people in the arena eager to connect with him), possessed a pure, soaring voice that few singers could match.

		The debate rages on, but this has been announced as the final Cosmicity album (of all-new songs, that is (who knows, a best-of cd could still be in the future)).
		This is a first as well as a last for Cosmicity, as the album is a concept album, dealing with New Love, confidence and the beginning of the journey of life together, with a twist of sci-fi thrown in for flavor.

		Journey was going through a time of transition as original keyboardist Gregg Rolie left the band and was replaced by Jonathan Cain (formerly of The Babys) who, along with lead vocalist Steve Perry and guitarist Neal Schon formed the songwriting nucleus of the group.
		"Who's Crying Now" was the first single from the album to hit the airwaves in the summer of 1981, and it exemplified Cain's more prominent keyboard playing, and showcased a prolonged Schon guitar solo at its close.
