Eschscholzia californica is the most widespread species, extending from the Columbia River Valley in southwestern Washington south into the Baja California peninsula and sporadically on to the Cape Region, west to the Pacific Ocean, and east to western Texas.
The species is highly variable, including long-lived prostrate perennials along the coast, erect perennials of inland valleys, and annuals in the interior.
Eschscholzia californica is distinctive for its expanded rim of the receptacle below the petals.

 California Poppy
The bright orange California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) was named for doctor-naturalist Johann Friedrich Gustav von Eschscholtz (somehow the "t" in his name got dropped), who was the surgeon for the Russian expedition team that dropped anchor in San Francisco in 1815 in a bay surrounded by hills covered with the golden flowers.
It was designated the state flower of California in 1903, and is now protected by state law prohibiting anyone from picking or destroying it.
The desert poppy, Eschscholzia parishii, is an openly branched species with yellow flowers found on rocky slopes below 4,000 feet from the southern Mojave Desert to the Colorado Desert.

The cultural information should be used as a guide only, I have found a number of different sowing techniques for the same seed from different sources there does not seem to be a standard.
As a rule of thumb the larger the seed size the more cover it requires, and fine seed like Lobelia Begonia etc requires no cover.

Eschscholzia californica had been first described 70 years before, but it was already very popular, having been grown in gardens for 64 years!

They have a label naming them as eschscholzia [lemon drops] and I am looking for some information as what to do with them if anyone can help.
I can find no information on eschscholzia across the Garden web site, but a Google search says they are California poppies.
There are some lovely shades in Eschscholzia californica, and this sort is 'short lived perennial'.

After I got these pictures (taken during the trip to Phu Hin Rongkhla), I searched the name and struck into the name Eschscholzia.
This is not unexpected; "Eschscholtz" and "Eschscholz" would have been (and still are) pronounced the same in German, and at that time spelling was not firmly fixed in most European languages.
In his description of the new genus in 1820, Chamisso called it Eschscholzia, which is the correct name according to the provisions of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.
