Eschscholzia californica is the most widespread species, extending from the Columbia River Valley in southwestern Washington south into the Baja California peninsula and sporadically on to the Cape Region, west to the Pacific Ocean, and east to western Texas.
Eschscholzia californica is distinctive for its expanded rim of the receptacle below the petals.
californica has escaped from cultivation in many parts of its native range, it is often possible to identify native populations by their seed dormancy, which is generally absent in plants of cultivated heritage.

There is a torus or ring at the base of the petals, the absence of which signals that you have found Eschscholzia caespitosa, the California collarless poppy, which is a smaller, more yellow flower with petals only 3/4-1" long.
California poppy is found in grassy and open places in many plant communities up to 6500' in much of cismontane California, and can bloom from February to September.
This is a species which folds up its petals when the light begins to fail, and sometimes does not open on a cloudy day.

That is a tiny plant only 5 to 8' tall with pale yellow flowers1/2 to 3/4' wide roughly.It may not also be E. maritima since it does have a bit of orange in there.
There is a lot of confusion and disagreement over the designation of Eschscholzia californica var.
I have, however, seen other forms of Eschscholzia in valley and foothill areas with yellow or golden-yellow flowers.
