Escondido Freeway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Escondido Freeway is the easternmost north-south freeway in Southern California, stretching from the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains to central San Diego within 20 miles (32 km) of the Mexican border.
The freeway continues southward into San Diego County, approximately ten miles (16 km) to the east of Camp Pendleton's eastern border, and continues to Escondido.
Before, the freeway briefly ended at El Cajon Boulevard (along the 40th Street alignment), and restarted south of University Avenue, but now it is possible to go all the way down to Interstate 5 on a freeway.

Palo Alto, California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Palo Alto is served by two major freeways, Highway 101 and Interstate 280, and is traversed by the Peninsula’s main north-south boulevard, El Camino Real (CA-82).
None of the highways on the Peninsula side of the bridge have been upgraded to freeway status due to opposition from residents of Palo Alto, Atherton and Menlo Park.
The freeway opponents fear that upgrading Highway 84 will encourage more people to live in Alameda County (where housing is more affordable) and commute to jobs in the mid-Peninsula area, thus increasing traffic in their neighborhoods to the south of the bridge.

Where the name "Escondido" actually comes from is disputed: the name in Spanish literally means 'hidden' but it did not actually become associated with the region until 1861, when an "Escondido Mining Company" obtained gold mining concessions during a small local gold rush that persisted into the 1920s.
Not until 1972 did the freeway reach this point, and then only as I-15; moreover, the modern I-15 freeway segment through Escondido was not built until well into the late 1970s (most of its bridges carry a 1976 or 1977 date).
