Member for Amber Valley and the friends of the Derwent valley line have mentioned the abolition of the Countryside Agency, and the fact that future funding for the community rail partnerships in general and the Derwent Valley Rural Transport Partnership in particular is not guaranteed after 2005.
There is a possible link between the Derwent valley line and Peak Rail, the heritage line at Matlock and, given that it is in the Peak district, there is clearly scope for the development of tourism along that line.

The last two miles of the track on the Esk Valley Railway between Whitby and Ruswarp, which usually carry modern diesel engines, had been ruled unsuitable for use by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway's heavier steam locomotives until Network Rail carried out expensive engineering works in February.
Another factor affecting the viability of the service was the designation earlier this month of the Esk Valley line as a Government pilot scheme for a community rail line, to be managed for local requirements at an affordable price and giving more powers to the local partnership helping to run it.
