 History of our police force
Records indicate that the earliest force within Dumfries and Galloway was set up in 1788 in Dumfries Burgh, when Constables were appointed by Justices, themselves appointed by the King, to control the population.
Dumfries and Galloway is geographically the third largest region in Scotland covering an area of 2,380 square miles with 239 miles of coastline and a population of around 146,000.
In 1976, the Unit’s responsibilities extended to the policing of all small ports in the Dumfries and Galloway area, from Annan harbour in the east to Portpatrick in the west.

Dumfries, gateway to Galloway (Kirkcudbrightshire - also known as the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, and Wigtownshire - including the Machars and the Rhins of Galloway), occupies a position in the South West of Scotland not far from the border with England (around 25 miles).
Dumfries also promotes a sustainable transport infrastructure with prompt access to all main UK destinations via road, largely through the A74(M) motorway and A75, the latter of which has been criticised due to large amounts of traffic and prevailing safety concerns.
The name Dumfries and Galloway is given to one of Scotland’s 32 council areas comprising the former (1975-96) districts of Nithsdale, Annandale and Eskdale, the Stewartry of Kirkcudbrightshire and the Machars.

Dumfries and Galloway Council wrote to us on 25 July 1996 to say that our proposal that the Council should comprise 47 members was considered by its Executive Committee on 16 July 1996.
Dumfries Constituency Conservative Association wrote on behalf of the Moffat Branch to request alterations to EWs 44 and 47 because the polling places would be 13 miles distant, there was a local affinity between Moffat Water and Moffat, the number of electors involved was small and the area of Ward 44 would be reduced.
The designation of the electoral wards that we recommend for the Dumfries and Galloway Council, together with information which we have received from the Council as to the 1996 electorate and forecast 2001 electorate of the proposed wards are set out at Appendix B to this report.

The above scheme was again jointly run by Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary and Dumfries and Galloway Fire and Rescue Service between 3 and 7 April 2006.
The scheme was aimed at raising awareness with the young people of community safety issues from both a Police and Fire Service perspective as well as promoting positive citizenship among them, diverting them away from antisocial behaviour, drugs and alcohol and giving them the opportunity to use their skills and abilities in various activities.
The community police officers and crime reduction officers from across Annandale and Eskdale were again all involved in the scheme and were encouraged by the enthusiasm and commitment of the young people who took part.
