		An esker is a narrow ridge of stratified material (till that has been sorted and deposited in layers according to grain size by running water).
		It is lower and wider than the main esker, which may indicate that it is made of a different mix of sand and gravel, or may reflect an unknown change of conditions in the melting ice sheet.
		The small knolls north of the eskers are kames, piles of gravel dropped into pits and crevices in the glacier by meltwater streams flowing on top of the ice.

		Eskers then are the ridges of gravel and sand that mark the routes of streams and rivers that flowed on, in, and beneath the glaciers.
		A mixture of sand, gravel, glacial sediment and boulders occurs in the Dahlen Esker.
		The stream-flow direction, although suggested mostly by the position of the glacier margin, may be indicated by a hill of gravel near the northeast end of the esker; this hill may mark the point where water flowed from the surface of the glacier through an opening to a tunnel or ice-walled river channel.

	Ingraham Esker
		The Ingraham Esker is a discontinuous, narrow, and sinuous ridge composed of sand and gravel that was deposited by a subglacial or englacial stream flowing in an ice tunnel.
		At least some of the sediment associated with the esker was deposited as a subaqueous outwash fan in a deep proglacial lake (glacial Lake Vermont).
		The esker fan deposits at some locations are interbedded with or overlain by varved clays, a deep-water, low energy proglacial lake deposit.

	What is an esker?
		Drewry (1986) has defined an esker as "a sinuous, narrow, steep-sided ridge composed of irregular stratified sediment deposited in contact with (glacial) ice in either an open channel or an enclosed conduit." Eskers have been found to be straight in most instances; however, some do tend to meander.
		Although esker dimensions differ greatly, the most common eskers are in the order of 50 metres high with some achieving heights of 80 metres.
		Eskers are found in southern and western Canada; however, they are found in the greatest quantity in the north.

	Boxborough Esker
		I thought it would be interesting to visit the esker and report how it appeared to me. It is not my intent to prove or disprove anything with this article, but simply to report what I saw and provide some photos for those who have not yet visited the site.
		The esker is a natural geological formation nearly a mile and three quarters long from tip to tail, and more than sixty feet tall.
		I also noticed that where a row crossed the esker’s spine at the southern end of the pond, that some of the stone was in large broken chunks and had large boreholes drilled in it.
