Eskimo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eskimos, or Esquimaux, are terms used to refer to people who inhabit the circumpolar region (excluding Scandinavia and most of Russia, but including the easternmost portions of Siberia).
The Eskimos are related to the Aleuts and the Alutiiq from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska as well as the Sug'piak from the Kodiak Islands and as far as the Prince William Sound in southcentral Alaska.
The term "Eskimo" is an exonym that is not generally used by Eskimos themselves.

Eskimo Joe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Their second album A Song Is A City was released in Australia on May 16, 2004 and the first single "From The Sea" debuted in the ARIA Top 40 as well as reaching the top of the Triple J Net 50 and was voted number 3 in the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2004.
Despite the fact that the first heat was one of their first gigs playing together, Eskimo Joe won the competition with prizes of a slot on the Livid Festival and a session in a recording studio.
The "Girl" album made the top 40 of the Australian album charts on release and went gold with tracks like "Planet Earth" and "Who Sold Her Out" receiving airplay on Triple J. In addition, some of the band's tracks featured on the TV show The Secret Life Of Us.

Eskimo (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eskimo is an album by The Residents that was originally supposed to follow 1976's Fingerprince.
However, due to many delays and arguments with management, it was not released until 1979.
Rumor has it that The Residents released the hilariously discesque "Diskomo" in order to ridicule their own success with Eskimo, fearing that they became too well known and the Theory of Obscurity was in danger.

Even in the musical community first eps and albums are sometimes looked upon with a smiling fondness that borders on embarrassment, as musicians thank their lucky stars that they've finally grown up.
Permeating the tone of this album is that sense of simplicity that comes as a result of the sincerity in the songwriting.
Gone is the guitar driven juvenile pop song that typified Eskimo Joe in the early years, in it's place a more textured sound built from the band's basic three piece line up and augmented by keyboards and extra guitar parts.

Eskimo constantly kept me slightly off-balance, which for a well-worn and jaded music reviewer, was a refreshing change of pace.
Graced by a great cover and internal artwork (kudos to Neil Shrubb and Julie Blackett), the music on this CD is not what you might expect since the album's obvious inspiration is the cold barren landscape of the far north.
Eskimo mirrors that duality, keeping you always aware of the danger lest you be lulled into a blissful sense of naiveté.

 ESKTEXT
Instead of an album made up of songs, The Residents produced a series of acoustic landscapes: each track is the sound of a story taking place, rather than the traditional song telling a story.
The stories are progressively more complex and dig deeper into the fictional Eskimo culture, starting with a simple Walrus Hunt and ending with a confrontation with the spirit world and a Festival of Death celebrating the end of the six-month night.
As the album progresses you can hear the slow invasion of American culture into the Eskimo lives as the Eskimo's spiritual leader, the Angakok, leads them in chants whose nonsense language becomes corrupted with phrases such as "Coca-Cola Adds Life".

As I was thinking about The Residents, it did occur to me that of all their stuff I've heard, Eskimo was definitely not so much in the creepy vein, and seemed to originate from a very different place than most of their recordings.
I seem to remember that either the liner notes for that album, or perhaps an article or review I read about it, mentioned that it was inspired by the rapid decay of native Inuit culture brought on by television, alcoholism, and unemployment.
Eskimo is a much moodier album, supposedly recorded after spending a year with the alaskan natives, but like everything they do there are subtle jokes hidden throughout the album.

Julian Cope Presents Head Heritage | Unsung | Reviews | The Residents - Eskimo
The Residents are arch myth-makers, and of all their albums this one seems to have the greatest amount of myths and legendary stories attached to it.
Eno has said that this album was instrumental in the formulation of the general idea for ‘My Life in the Bush of Ghosts’ in that he wanted to create a psychedelic vision of Africa in a way that, with this album, The Residents had evoked a psychedelic vision of the North Pole.
The Residents are alleged to have constructed many of their own instruments for this recording which were supposedly tuned to Eskimo tunings (a definite nod to Harry Partch), and one of this album’s strengths is the difficulty of identifying the instruments being used.

The young man from Celbridge has been working on the album for almost two years, and its release was greeted with enthusiasm and relief from a growing fan base who must have wondered if they were ever going to hear it.
