As we drove toward the city, I was struck by the large number of dilapidated huts in which people live, the ramshackle buildings that serve as commercial establishments, and the strong smell of factory and vehicle exhaust fumes.
Although the city is clearly in a state of disrepair, the residents of Esmeraldas are dressed neatly, in dresses or long slacks.
