Esophagogastroduodenoscopy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In medicine (gastroenterology), esophagogastroduodenoscopy is a diagnostic endoscopic procedure that visualises the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract up to the duodenum.
It is considered a minimally invasive procedure since it does not require an incision into one of the major body cavities and does not require any significant recovery after the procedure (unless sedation or anesthesia has been used).
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy may be abbreviated EGD, or OGD if one uses the British spelling 'oesophago-'.

THE MERCK MANUAL OF GERIATRICS, Ch. 103, Endoscopic Gastrointestinal Procedures
The goal of esophagogastroduodenoscopy is to visualize the entire upper GI tract (to the second portion of the duodenum).
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy may be used to monitor the healing rate of a gastric ulcer but is usually unnecessary with a duodenal ulcer.
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy can best identify the site of upper GI bleeding and should be performed as soon as the patient is stable.
