Esotericism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Esoteric is an adjective originating in Hellenic Greece under the domain of the Roman Empire; it comes from the Greek esôterikos, from esôtero, the comparative form of esô: "within".
Historically, esoteric knowledge is not generally known in large part because it is deliberately kept secret from those outside a select group.
Because of this openness, the reflexive aspect of the esoteric prevails: that it is complex and difficult to grasp except by the fewer, more perceptive or aware.

One outstanding contribution of the Russellian science is that it reunites scientific physical knowledge with esoteric spiritual knowledge.
However, in the course of history, a process of bifurcation took place, and knowledge was dichotomized into sacred and secular knowledge.
Sacred knowledge was further divided into esoteric and exoteric knowledge—the former in the form of mystery schools, which went largely underground, and the latter in the form of theology or scholasticism.

Those who have been initiated into the nature of this higher knowledge are not in the least surprised that the uninitiated should so think, for the secret of initiation can only be understood by those who have to a certain degree experienced this initiation into the higher knowledge of existence.
This esoteric knowledge is no more of a secret for the average human being than writing is a secret for those who have never learned it.
It is a natural law among all initiates to withhold from no man the knowledge that is due him but there is an equally natural law which lays down that no word of esoteric knowledge shall be imparted to anyone not qualified to receive it.

Towards a Foundation of a Universal Esoteric Science
If an esoteric science is to be truly universal, it must be based on fundamental elements of knowledge that can be confirmed or refuted (as much as possible) and can serve as the foundation for further units.
The greatest denial of knowledge however is found in some hidebound exoteric Religions and Cults, where learning of anything other than one's own faith or the teachings of the cult leader is actually depreciated or condemned as a distraction, or the work of the devil.
So an esoteric science, as suggested here, is not about the path to enlightenment or self-realisation, which is the true goal of mystical and esotericist practice, but about understanding the "intermediate realities" between the objective physical and the transcendent.

 Self knowledge and esoteric education
Esoteric education, or inner education, begins with the most simple yet fundamental questions that are asked by every child: "Who am I?", "Where did I come from?", "Why am I me and not you?".
Esoteric education is a "drawing out" of a kind of knowledge that is inseparable from one's own being.
It is not knowledge about something, although it might appear so, rather it is a kind of knowledge that is the inherent property of the thing in question.

There are considerations of the utmost possible interest connected with precise knowledge on these points, because each round is, as it were, specially allotted to the predominance of one of the seven principles in man, and in the regular order of their upward gradation.
Esoteric science, though interesting itself mainly with matters generally regarded as appertaining to religion, would not be the complete comprehensive and trustworthy system that it is, if it failed to bring all the facts of earth life into harmony with its doctrines.

In other words, esoteric knowledge arises from a situation where it is necessary first to pass all levels of a detailed developed chain of personal achievement.
Thus, esoteric knowledge develops not from a desire to code and hide knowledge, but from the simple circumstance that one possessing the highest level of knowledge cannot relay this knowledge to a person who has not yet passed all the requisite steps of internal transformations and changes of consciousness.

If we are to designate that which existed in the form of an esoteric Christianity, we might say that in past ages of the evolution of the earth people knew of the existence of these worlds through the manifestations that I have characterized a short while ago.
But the esoteric element which Christ gave to his initiated disciples consisted therein, that He told them: What took place on Golgotha, is the reflection of superterrestial events and of the relationship between the worlds of the gods connected with Saturn, Sun, Moon and the present Earth, and Ahriman.
The esoteric knowledge is always a knowledge of facts which take place, as such, in the spiritual world, and remain hidden behind the veil of the physical world.

Manifest knowledge and the sciences of jurisprudence, they assert, belong to the theologians and scholars of the general run of ordinary Muslims, whereas the hidden knowledge and the knowledge of truth are reserved for the Sufi priests, who preferred to call themselves the elite.
Sufis support the innovative dichotomies by citing the abnormal things done by al-Khidhr when Musa was in his company, such as making a hole in a ship, killing a boy and restoring a falling wall, as chronicled in surat al-Kahf (18.60-82).
They justify Musa's objections to al-Khidhr's deed on the grounds that Musa had acquired exoteric or manifest knowledge only, while al-Khidr was one of the elite possessed esoteric or hidden knowledge.
