Until relatively late in time Esoxlucius evolved and spread across the upper latitudes of the northern hemisphere to North America by means of the Bering Strait land bridge.
These pike (Esoxlucius) are believed to have originally found their way into Britain via the North Sea, when the River Thames was a tributary of the River Rhine.
The maximum weight achieved by Esoxlucius, has been the subject of great debate and speculation, historically weights of up to 90lb's have been mentioned but realistically 55-60lb is probably nearer the mark.
Esox, the old Latin name for pike, used as early as Pliny; perhaps derived from the Greek isox, or both the Latin and Greek from a common Celtic root (as in the Welsh ehawc, eog, "salmon")
lucius, from the supposed Latin name for the species, likely derived from the Greek lukos, "wolf", an obvious reference to the predatory habits of this fish.
For those of us of northern European ancestry and an interest in such things, this is one of the fishes that would have fed our ancestors in the distant past.
A further example for this symbolic meaning is given by the numerous pikes carved on the wooden main portal of the St. Lucius church, Chur, Switzerland (12) which meanwhile probably have fallen victim to a renovation of the church (13).
The Lucius family from Dresden whose demonstrably eldest ancestor, Christophorus Lucius, died in the year 1592 when he was a deacon at the Kreuzkirche (Holy Cross church), Dresden (14).
The Lucius family from Nassovia-Weilburg whose eldest known ancestor is Hilarius Lucius from Altenstedten who was mentioned 1620 for the first time (20).
The so-called walleyed pike are not true pike but members of the perch family.
The northern pike is classified as Esoxlucius, the chain pickerel as Esox niger

Dietary uptake in pike (Esoxlucius) of some polychlorinated biphenyls, polychlorinated naphthalenes and polybrominated diphenyl ethers administered in natural diet
The dietary uptake of 12 halogenated diaromatic compounds was studied using northern pike (Esoxlucius L.) fed with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum)).
Before the trout were fed to the pike, they had been injected with a cocktail of five polychlorinated biphenyls, four polychlorinated naphthalenes, and three polybrominated diphenyl ethers, dissolved in rainbow trout lipid.
Illegally introduced populations of northern pike in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine have been caught during the spring spawning season and found to be covered with pale bluish-white, granular skin lesions 3-10 mm in diameter and 0.25 mm thick.
Margenau 1995 reported the disease in both northern pike and muskellungeEsox masquinongy in Wisconsin.
My textbureau ESOX Holland translates, writes and edits all sorts of texts in commission.
He also takes many other sublime images, but this will just turn into an envious rant if I'm not careful, so I'll leave it at that...suffice to say that the best word I can think of to describe his photostream is STONKING!"
"Some of the most expressive and beautiful photos on flickr, in my opinion, are here on EsoxLucius' site.
