The Great Britain esp@cenet database contains the bibliographic data and images of the specification of GB patent applications published by The Patent Office since 4 January 1979 (the complete set of applications published under the Patents Act 1977).
By browsing the UK Patent Office esp@cenet server site at http://gb.espacenet.com you are indicating your acceptance of these conditions of use.
It is possible, using the esp@cenet service to search other national and international patent databases (see options on the esp@cenet Home page).

Using esp@cenet via one of the national office websites, it is possible to search all the patent applications published in the past two years (or more in some cases) by any national office in the European Patent Organisation.
esp@cenet can also be used to find English-language abtracts of documents in the European Patent Office's in-house databases of patents from throughout the world (a list of the countries covered is shown in the table).
If a patent document was published in several countries, then one representative document has been selected for inclusion in the esp@cenet data.

Because the search features of espacenet require Javascript and a browser that supports frames, it requires Netscape Navigator 4 or MS Internet Explorer 4, or newer, or some other browser that supports the said functions.
If you need answers to questions like these, esp@cenet is your tool.
The global database covers patent documents from tens of countries, many dating back as far as to the 1920's.
