Final Fantasy Odyssey | FF VI
FFVI uses the standard ATB battle engine as well all know by now and there is more variety in terms of battle commands in FFVI as well like Mog's "Dance" command and so on.
The clash between "Espers" and "humans" serves as the game's main theme as magic is lost throughout the early stages of the game but then magic sees a resurgence later on as well and the game has a dominant villain in Kefka.
The overall musical tracks in FFVI were quite dramatic, and they also fit the emotional mood of the game very well and while there may not be a good variety of tracks in the game, there are still a decent number and they are very well done.

Though FFVI might not have been the most graphically stupendous game on its console, it was a pioneer in making RPGs moody and dark, and did this fairly competently.
Espers are basically the Summons/Guardian Forces from recent Final Fantasy offerings, but are also actually a living race in FFVI's universe.
Overall, the gameplay in FFVI is great, though a touch in need of inspiration (even for its time, 1993 in Japan, it lacked originality).

Square's inclusion of both FFV and FFVI was a wise choice in that each game encompasses incredibly unique features that have been used, mimicked and aped by other RPGs to this date.
Another feature strongly tied to FFVI is the incredibly large cast of characters available to join the player's party, including Terra, a mysterious young girl with unspeakable powers, and Edgar, the engineering emperor.
FFVI is exactly this type of game, with its intricately detailed plot, criss-crossing character relationships and involving human (melo)drama.

It's something the FFVI gang has gotten used to by now, along with Wakka's inherent ability to be in the most random places possible.
He loves to tease and rough-house playfully (even though a lot of times he forgets his own strength), is prone to getting people in headlocks, and enjoys jumping from heights and landing seemingly unharmed on his feet.

The Final Fantasy Forums - Why is FFVI better then FFVII??!?!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
FFVI had better character than FFVII(Cloud Strife was cool but he's still not better than Locke).Kefka was the perfect villian(a dude wirh a creepy laugh and dresses like a gay stalker what more could you ask for?).The Esper System was the best magic system of any FF game.
FFVI is friggin good, but not a patch on FFVII, why do you think they are remaking FFVII and not FFVI, because the story is better and everyone loves it.
Actually, they're remaking FFVII instead of FFVI (if they even are, it's still just rumor with nothing other than a tech demo to back it up) because it made them more money in the first place, so they figure it will make them just as much if not more money in a remake.

Each esper (there were about 25 or so) had a percentage for certain spells that they could teach you.
The magic points were multiplied by the percentage of each spell the currently equipped esper has and you began to learn the spell.
But it's hard to think about those things when you're planning who needs what esper when, and who should have what materia equipped, and what you need to draw and when.

FFVI had a much more involving story that also involved rotating main characters and it was interesting to see how all the stories collided.
It is FAR better than the draw system of FFVIII but still not as good as the Esper System of FFVI, The Job class system of FFVI or even the grid System of FFX.
