Mr Gill was a keen Esperantist and therefore already planning to visit Dresden for the International Esperantist Congress being held there in August 1908., He knew that quite a lot of other esperantists were also vegetarians and that the Esperanto Congresses always make sepcial provisions for vegetarians (Tolstoy was the Esperantist Hon.President in 1908).
The Esperantist Union has decided to co-operate with the International Vegetarian Union, and will do all it can to assist in the propagation of ideas for which the both Unions are working.
Esperantists are the most sane and practical of enthusiasts, and we heartily welcome their co-operation in our movement.

The fall of the bureaucratic socialist regimes in the USSR and eastern Europe was a body blow to the Esperantist international language movement, removing at a stroke substantial material resources, such as subsidised premises and publications, paid officials and teachers.
Esperantist organisations were decimated and clubs closed down as the cold hand of capitalism focused workers' attention on bread and butter questions.
The closing down of the Soviet Esperantist Union at the height of Stalin's xenophobia as a "counterrevolutionary organisation" gave the international language a bad press in the 'official' communist movement which has left its mark of anti-Esperanto prejudice to this day.

 The Anationalist Eugène Lanti
When he returned to civilian life he got in touch with the Esperantist workers' movement, which had just gotten up and running in the years before the war, but was still disorganised.
Lanti took part in the Prague Esperanto congress in 1921, where the decision was made to found an organisation that was to have the specific task of bringing together the Esperantist workers of all countries.
Lanti was one of the founders of the French Communist Party, but as a consequence of several trips to the Soviet Union and his differences of opinion with the leaders of the Soviet Esperantist association SEU, he left the organisation at the end of the 20's and became very critical of the Soviet regime.

Publicity material was prepared for use in Esperantist journals and by correspondents of the movement in various countries - but time was short and little response was expected for the first Eisteddfod in that year.
The two overseas groups which crowned the success of the 1947 Eisteddfod, one by the sweeping range of its singing, the other by its gaiety and colour, were a choir of Hungarian railway workers and a team of Spanish girl dancers.

Tolkien’s letter was reprinted again (with the source named as The British Esperantist), this time accompanied by an Esperanto translation.
Tolkien says that although he takes an interest in the international language movement, and Esperanto in particular, he was not a “practical Esperantist” (which, he observes, perhaps advisors should be) and he could neither write nor speak it.
He states that he had learned the language while he was a teenager (its grammar and structure) and read a fair amount written in it.

To this end I shall be publishing two prize-winning essays submitted to the University of Liverpool: it is entirely wrong that work of this calibre, produced in Britain, should be seen solely by the judge(s) of the essay competition and then confined to a dusty drawer at the university.
I hope, too, to encourage original writing in Esperanto: I know there are esperantists in this country who write creatively and it is entirely proper that they should have a forum for their work.
