ESPERANZA, Agusan del Sur (PNA) -- A joint army and Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) detachment in Barangay Duangan this town was attacked by about 70 fully armed communist guerillas early dawn Saturday.
Police said a reinforcement team headed by Esperanza Police Chief Inspector Reynaldo Abejuela immediately responded to the area which is just a few meters away from a forest products monitoring station, but the communist guerillas already left when they arrived in the area.
Caraga Region is one of the communist insurgents’ hot beds in the country because of widespread poverty despite its rich deposit in natural resources and fertile, huge agricultural lands waiting to be develop.

Army troops patrolling a village chanced upon 20 rebels at dawn yesterday in Esperanza, Agusan del Sur, setting off a half-hour gunbattle that killed three rebels.
None of the soldiers of the 29th Infantry Battalion were wounded and the other rebels, part of the group of Duwa Salamanca alias Donnis of the NPA Front Committee 88 fled, the military said.
Meanwhile, the NPA has intensified abductions and forcibly recruited at least 40 civilians from Camarines Sur into the communist movement since last month.

This term generally refers to the 18 Non-Moro Indigenous Communities in Mindanao which, by force of colonization, were driven to the deepest hinterlands.
