Esposizione universale di Roma MCMXLII - anno XXo E.F. - Hugh Pagan Online   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Title: Esposizione universale di Roma MCMXLII - anno XXo E.F. Publication: (Roma), "a cura del Commisariato Generale" (1939).
The international exhibition scheduled to be held in Rome in 1942 was intended as a glorification of the ruling Fascist regime, and although it was never to take place this most impressive publication is a vivid record of what was intended by Mussolini and by the exhibition's organisers.
The present quarto edition is obviously less impressive than its larger equivalent, but it is as rare, and the illustrations are similar, differing only in size and perhaps in the exact shade of their colour printing.

The E.U.R. provides a good image of how urban Italy would have looked if the fascist regime would not have fallen; large, symmetrical streets and cold, Roman-inspired buildings.
During the (The decade from 1950 to 1959) 1950s and (The decade from 1960 to 1969) 1960s, old buildings were completed, and other new buildings were constructed in the same style - housing offices, ministries, large gardens and great parks.

Memories of the destruction caused to the centre of Genoa by the street battles are still fresh in Italy and contributed to the decision to move the summit away from Rome's historically important city centre.
Ironically, the leaders of the new Europe which emerged from the ruins of Fascism will meet in the strikingly modern Roman suburb of EUR, initially conceived by Benito Mussolini to showcase the grandeur of his wartime regime for the "Esposizione Universale di Roma" that never was.
The 25 heads of state and government gathering for the summit were initially to have convened in the museum of modern art near the Villa Borghese park in central Rome.

The Esposizione Universale Roma (E.U.R.) is a large complex, built in 1935 by Benito Mussolini as symbol of fascism for the world; he wanted to expand the new Rome in the west, to connect it to the sea.
The E.U.R. was originally conceived for the 1942 world exhibition, which would never take place since Italy entered the war in 1940.
The E.U.R. provides a good image of how urban Italy would have looked if the fascist regime would not have fallen; large, symmetrical streets and cold buildins of either stile Littorio, inspired by Roman architecture, or Rationalism, built in the traditional limestone, tufa and marble.

 The Modern Sack of Rome
It actually was conceived in 1937 as the site for the 1942 world's fair that was never held (and for which the subway also was begun).
A national government commission was to carry out development there of imposing exhibition and meeting halls, sports arenas and stadiums, a huge permanent amusement area, dramatic piazzas, grand boulevards lined with trees, sprawling parks and formal gardens with picturesque promenades, fountains and a large man-made lake.
EUR was then to finance further development, and pay off the government loan, from the proceeds of sale of land for private office and residential development, along with the rental of the public halls and buildings, which it would own.

The area on which EUR stands was chosen at the end of the 1930s as the site for the Rome Universal Exhibition (Esposizione Universale di Roma, hence the acronym EUR), a great international exhibition which was supposed to open in 1942, exactly twenty years after the advent of fascism.
The idea was to house the exhibition in a complex of impressive structures, built to last, and the architect Marcello Piacentini was made project manager.
Prominent among the most important buildings is the Palazzo della Civiltà del Lavoro, better known in Rome as the Square Colosseum, designed by the architects Guerrini, Lapadula and Romano.

Earlier attempts at such a synthesis can be seen in the abstracted monumental Classicism promoted by Mussolini during the 1930s and 1940s.
Guerrini, Lapadula and Romano's Palace of Italian Civilization (1942) in Esposizione Universale di Roma (EUR), just outside of Rome, is an example; its monumental cubic form, defined by rows of deep-set travertine arcades, mimics the stone arches and axiality of Classical and Baroque Rome while adhering to the Modernist discipline of plane, unornamented surfaces.
In the U.S., a variant form of abstracted Neo-Classicism can be seen in the pierced marble cladding of Edward Durell Stone's Gallery of Modern Art (1964) commissioned by Huntington Hartford, and in the arched travertine facade of Wallace K. Harrison's Metropolitan Opera House (1966), both in New York City.
