The Township of Esquimalt is a municipality at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada.
It is bordered to the east by the provincial capital, Victoria, to the south by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, to the west by Esquimalt Harbour, to the northwest by the town of View Royal, and to the north by a narrow inlet of water called the Gorge.
In 1865, the British Royal Navy relocated the headquarters of its Pacific fleet from Valparaíso, Chile, to the Esquimalt Harbour.

Esquimalt is located on the southeast coast of Vancouver Island, to the west of the City of Victoria.
Esquimalt possesses one of the finest natural harbours on the west coast of the Americas, and this fact was not lost upon the representatives of the Royal Navy who established its headquarters in Esquimalt Harbour in 1865.
When Crown lands from the original Esquimalt townsite to the western boundaries of the Puget’s Sound farms were sold off between 1856 and 1858 the buyers included many of British Columbia’s most prominent early citizens such as Roderick Finlayson and Dr. Helmcken.

Esquimalt was investigated by the Company, but the presence of better agriculture land led to the present site of Victoria being chosen and Fort Victoria was built in 1843.
Initially, the only connection between Esquimalt and Victoria was by water, a dangerous proposition in bad weather, but this improved with the development of a trail and later, a wagon road.
British troops were pulled out of British Columbia when it joined Confederation in 1871, leaving the new province vulnerable although the navy was still at Esquimalt.

The Esquimalt War Memorial, located in Memorial Park, was designed by architect Hubert Savage, A.R.I.B.A., and unveiled on September 8, 1927, to honour those who fell in the Great War.
Brass tablets with inscriptions were provided by the Esquimalt Branch of the (I.O.D.E.), as well as a brass tablet added in 1947 to honour the fallen of WWII.
On June 6, 1993, a brass plaque honouring Esquimalt War Dead was placed on the Cenotaph, containing a list of names of those fallen in WWI and WWII.
