It is bordered to the east by the provincial capital, Victoria, to the south by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, to the west by Esquimalt Harbour, to the northwest by the town of View Royal, and to the north by a narrow inlet of water called the Gorge.
Esquimalt had a population of 16,127 in 2001.
The word Esquimalt is an alteration of "Ess-whoy-malth," a phrase usually translated as "place of the shoaling waters." The Songhees Nation, who have a reserve in Esquimalt, were originally located on the western shore of what is now Victoria Harbour, but were relocated in 1911.

Esquimalt is the Canadian Navy's main west-coast base, home to two destroyers, five frigates, six patrol vessels, one replenishment ship, and a sail training vessel.
She was in the larger of the drydocks at Esquimalt, in the final stages of a major overhaul which will permit her to serve for several more years.
Esquimalt's other destroyer, HMCS Huron (DDH 281) has been out of service for a period, and was in the early stages of a major overhaul.

It is just over 10,000 acres (40 km²) and is located on Vancouver Island in the municipality of Esquimalt, just West of Victoria.
CFB Esquimalt includes HMCS Naden, Fleet Maintainance Facility - Cape Breton (FMF-CB), a Fire Fighting and Damage Control School, the Naval Officer Training Centre (NOTC Venture), and 716 MQ's located in nine sites (Belmot Park, Work Point, Royal Roads...).
The drydock in the dockyard was built in the late 1800's as a condition of Confederation.

And the letter also says that the Esquimalt Inn will be paying its $100 fine for failing to post a no-smoking sign in accordance with the bylaw.
Kathryn Stewart, lawyer for the CRD, said that "assuming the proprietor of the Esquimalt Inn" complies with the anti-smoking bylaw there shouldn't be any need to proceed with the recently launched civil injunction against the establishment for defying the bylaw.
