 Esquipulas
The principal attraction in Esquipulas is a large basilica that houses Guatemala's revered Black Christ, a wooden image venerated for its miraculous powers.
Bounded by the cloud-covered massif of the Sierra de las Minas mountains to the north, the valley is traversed by the Motagua River, a source of water to irrigate patches of farm land in the cactus-filled terrain.
The image was carved by Guatemalan sculptor Quirio Cataño in the 16th century from dark balsam wood, later turned fl by the smoke of hundreds of years of burning candles and incense.

On 14 October 2002, the mayor of Esquipulas responded in writing that in accordance with Decree No. 35-96 of the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala, he was entitled to dismiss, without legal authorization, any workers who took industrial action.
In these circumstances, the Committee deplores the attitude of the municipality of Esquipulas for dismissing 42 trade unionists without the judicial authorization provided for in the Labour Code, as well as for refusing to reinstate the workers in their jobs despite warnings from the administrative authority.

Esquipulas is certainly worth a visit, though, for its colossal church, the most important pilgrimage site in Central America.
It's also positioned very close to the border with Honduras and El Salvador, though if you're heading into Honduras, you're most likely to end up spending the night in Chiquimula, a dull town that's the gateway to the ruins of Copán just over the border.

Two Sisters of Mercy minister in the rural, agricultural village of Chanmagua - located in the province of Esquipulas, Chiquimula, about 220 km east of Guatemala City and approximately 7 km from the Honduran border.
Chanmagua is the center of a rural parish (diocese) encompassing 19 villages.
The church and Parish Center are at the heart of the community, and the Sisters of Mercy's ministry there includes working with lay leaders who tend to the pastoral needs of the community and overseeing a residence for young women living and studying in Esquipulas.
