Topic: Essendine

In the News (Sat 2 Jun 12)

  Metroactive Stage | 'Present Laughter'
Essendine is London's most popular stage actor, an outrageously vain, pampered, middle-aged philanderer who tries to blunt his mounting panic at aging by sleeping with a parade of star-struck young women.
Essendine is so addicted to larger-than-life theatrics that he can't ever manage to stop the performance, using comically large and stagy gestures and making overly dramatic pronouncements ("There's something sad about happiness, isn't there?") even when at home among his affectionate collective of faithful colleagues and business partners.
Throughout the play, Essendine is an emotional wreck, preparing for a career-capping tour of the theaters of Africa, a venture that terrifies him almost as much as the thought of growing old and losing his famous charm.

It is morning, and the young Daphine Stillington (Shannon Foy), apparently one of many "groupies" orbiting Essendine (as the play progresses, this indeed appears to be the case--the ladies and the gentlemen love him), surprises and annoys Essendine's maid, butler and secretary with her presence.
Essendine simply cannot say no. Instead he puts her in the spare room and tries to forget her.
His Essendine was ridiculous, parading in shiny red pajamas and a variety of house robes.

n "Present Laughter," written in 1939, but first produced in 1942, Cowar's mouthpiece is Garry Essendine, a successful actor and ladies' man, whose self-satisfaction is briefly shaken when a young would be playwright challenges the aging (fortyish) star as a hollow charmer, only to fall helplessly under his spell like everyone else.
oward as Essendine gets to defend the proposition that life is essentially a performance: "I'm always acting," he tells one of his admirers.
f course, Garry Essendine is me," Coward told an interviewer in 1972.

One of Essendine's overnight ladies is Daphne Stillington and Kim Rhodes fetchingly portrays the young star-struck aspiring actress whose head is turned by the experience.
Not only is she cool and elegant and poised, but she and Essendine engage in a battle of banter that is Coward at his best; one of the most entertaining interludes in the play.
Essendine believes the whole business of sex is vastly overrated, "I enjoy it for what it's worth and fully intend to go on doing so for as long as anybody is interested, and when that time comes that they're not, I shall be perfectly content to settle down with an apple and a good book!"

Essendine has an endless parade of women traipsing almost nonstop through his oh-so-glittering Roaring Twenties life.
Essendine is a man who requires an audience so that he can exist, a self-admitted performer in every aspect of his life who can’t seem to have a genuine moment outside the spotlight.
Essendine, as played by Paul Graffy, is a perfect stereotype of the self-involved actor enchanted with his every move.

Essendine constantly flails in the wind of his inversely angered and adoring guests voices.
Essendine dispels late-night trysts in the morning by saying goodbye without ever appearing to mean it, adheres to his friend's social predicaments in the afternoon by saying something he is soon to forget, and conjures grander problems for himself and his friends every evening by preparing another late-night tryst.
Critics for more than half a century have assumed Noel Coward's main character to be his impression of himself: charismatic, adored, unfaithful, forgetful and much better in the theatre than in life.

As the actor faces his 40s, a tendency to overact and the loads of devoted fans who always seem to arrive just before he goes to bed, Essendine’s estranged wife suggests toning down the “present mirth.” However, a simple life does not appear to be in store for a character Coward based on himself.
As Essendine approaches insanity over trite social inconveniences, his wife orchestrates the elaborate farcical situations that make this play fascinating to watch.
He leaps over couches, chases Essendine into rooms and invades in the middle of the night just to be near the actor.

What Callow lacks in looks, he makes up for in naughtiness, showing in Essendine - a man who just can't stop acting or screwing around - that inside every successful, charming man is a little boy screaming to be let out.
He doesn't quite stamp his foot, but it is a close thing as he bounces on the pouffe and squirms when his ex-wife, Liz, gives him a ticking off like a prep school matron who has discovered her charge out of bed after lights out.
Callow's Essendine is not so much Brad Pitt going to seed as a balding, portly Peter Pan who just can't grow up and take responsibility for his own behaviour.

It is vital and brilliant theatre, a summary of Coward's preoccupations with vanity, charm selfishness and the triumphant ego.

As his flat is invaded by admirer after admirer, Callow's Essendine gives one overacted performance after another - and, in designer Paul Farnsworth's fl and white art-deco flat, he is surrounded by photos of his past performances (in a clever autobiographical touch, photos of Callow in his own previous performances).
Essendine is all exterior and no interior - and Callow achieves a mounting melancholy as it becomes clearer and clearer that Essendine's performance has swallowed the identity of its performer.
You sense that this sadness of vapidity was as much Coward's as it is Essendine's; the laughter, like Essendine's identity, is one hundred percent presented.
