In 1879 Essendon played Melbourne in one of the earliest night matches recorded when the ball was painted white, and they were also the first club to score ten goals in one match of senior status.
Essendon has 3 wins so far in the season, against Sydney Swans in Round 1, the Brisbane Lions in Round 17, and against rivals the Collingwood Magpies in Round 19.
Essendon have agreed on this second option as their "clash jumper", however the club has stated it intends to do whatever possible to avoid ever wearing the alternate design, to widespread support from the majority of club members and traditionalists from other clubs.

In 1896 a breakaway group saw the establishment of the Victorian Football League (VFL) from which North Melbourne was excluded mainly through the opposition of the Collingwood Football Club which had not forgiven North for a controversial game in which they had met.

Essendon, which from the outset was known as the 'Same Old', was formed by a group with extensive farming and horse racing interests, prominent among whom was the McCracken family.
Robert McCracken was the club's first president, while his son Alex was appointed the club's first secretary at the age of just seventeen and later went on to serve as president of both Essendon (between 1887 and 1903) and the VFL (from its inception in 1897 until 1915).
Essendon won 7.16 to 3.5 (behinds were recorded in the score at this time, but were not actually to count until 1897).

In 1877, the Victorian Football Association was formed, the first controlling body for Australian Rules football in Victoria, with Essendon joining Melbourne, Geelong, Carlton, Albert Park, St.Kilda, Hotham and East Melbourne in the new competition.
