Topic: Essential dignity

Essential dignity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In other words, essential dignity seeks to view the strengths of a planet or point as though it were isolated from other factors in the sky of the natal chart.
By comparison, accidental dignity is the strength of the planet or point in relation to all the other factors in any given natal chart: for example, its proximity to other planets, angles of the chart and fixed stars, and the aspects (or symmetrical angular connections) it receives from other planets or points in the chart.
For example, the essential dignity of Mars, if located at 27 degrees of Capricorn would take into account the fact that Mars is exalted in Capricorn, and also that it is the bounds ruler of the 27th degree of Capricorn and also the face ruler of the 27th degree of Capricorn.

Guest Editorial: Toward a Common Language on Human Dignity - Ethics & Medicine
In the same way that human dignity precedes the actualization of important functional capacities, the writer of Hebrews commented, "By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible." (Hebrews 11:3, NKJ).
Even though the authority of Holy Scripture is not everywhere welcomed, the phrase "human dignity" coincides with the biblical ideal of worthiness due respect and lays an ethical foundation for treating fellow human beings in a manner pleasing to God.
Article 1 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights stipulates that, "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." Likewise, the principle of individual autonomy preeminent in much bioethical discourse is grounded in the respect for persons that flows out of a robust appreciation of human dignity.

Skyscript: Understanding Planetary Dignity and Debility - Part 1: Introducing Dignity
Yet modern textbooks often fail to explain the importance of assessing dignity and many students are unfamiliar with Ptolemy's table of essential dignity.
Accidental dignity can be conveyed by any attribute that fortifies the planet - such as being direct, swift in motion, angular, free from combustion, in a beneficial aspect to a fortunate planet or conjunct a fixed star of a fortunate nature.
Where a planet lacks essential dignity, but is brought to prominence through accidental dignity - such as angularity and an unhindered motion - the result is a powerful planet that may or may not be beneficial.

 The Sources Of Human Dignity
According to this view, human dignity is the value that rests in the person’s essential mode of being, as an individual substance of rational and free nature.
The acquired dignity corresponds to the actualization of the conscious life of the person and of all those other qualities that are essential to human nature, such as rationality, morality, sociability, etc. Indeed, through her conscious and free actions, the human person actualizes her various potentialities; the whole psychological and moral personality takes shape.
Hence, the root of the person’s essential dignity is her unique mode of being as an individual substance of rational and free nature.

Secondly, it is necessary today for the Church to assume a universal patronage of the dignity of the human person and of man's essential freedoms, in an age in which totalitarian tyranny has imposed itself upon nearly half of the human race.
And man's essential dignity consists in his dependence on God alone; man's essential freedom requires that he should be governed, in the end, only by the will of God.
In consequence of his personal dignity, man, in his quest for God, has a right to be free from all manner of coercion or compulsion that might be brought to bear on him by other men, by social or political institutions or by the power of human law.

Protecting life and dignity: "No war is above international law"
Events in Iraq and other recent armed conflicts have time and again reminded us that the essential dignity of human beings is often among the first casualties of war.
This happens despite the fact that there is almost universal support for the Geneva Conventions, the treaties at the heart of international humanitarian law that oblige all parties to a conflict to protect the life and dignity of persons not or no longer fighting.
They argue that the law should primarily serve the security needs of states, and that the legal protection of people against abuses of their dignity needs to be watered down in order to stop terrorist acts.

This image and likeness of God, which is essential for the human being, is passed on by the man and woman, as spouses and parents, to their descendants: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it" (Gen 1: 28).
On the basis of the eternal "unity of the two", this dignity directly depends on woman herself, as a subject responsible for herself, and at the same time it is "given as a task" to man. Christ logically appeals to man's responsibility.
The particular reference to the dignity of women and their vocation, precisely in our time, can and must be received in the "light and power" which the Spirit grants to human beings, including the people of our own age, which is marked by so many different transformations.

THE QUESTION OF HUMAN DIGNITY - by Fr. Thomas Williams, L.C. - Catholic Dossier - July/August 2000
According to this view, dignity would reside in human nature itself.14 In order to be universal, such personal dignity could not be a function of intelligence, nor abilities, nor accomplishments, nor moral worth, nor even baptism, for these elements vary from person to person.
The key to a response lies in recognizing that dignity exists on different levels or in different degrees,26 and whereas moral probity undoubtedly merits particular esteem, the fundamental human dignity common to all men and that undergirds universal human rights rests on man’s similarity to God as a creature made in his image.
The Council states that “there is a common dignity of members deriving from their rebirth in Christ” and thus “a true equality between all with regard to the dignity and to the activity which is common to all the faithful in the building up of the Body of Christ” (Lumen Gentium, 32).

On The Dignity And Vocation Of Women
Thus the "fullness of time" manifests the extraordinary dignity of the "woman." On the one hand, this dignity consists in the supernatural elevation to union with God in Jesus Christ, which determines the ultimate finality of the existence of every person both on earth and in eternity.
Mary means, in a sense, a going beyond the limit spoken of in the Book of Genesis (3:16) and a return to that "beginning" in which one finds the "woman" as she was intended to be in creation, and therefore in the eternal mind of God: in the bosom of the Most Holy Trinity.
