The Interstate highways in the state are I-95 (the Connecticut Turnpike) running southwest to northeast along the coast, I-84 running southwest to northeast in the center of the state, I-91 running north to south in the center of the state, and I-395 running north to south near the eastern border of the state.
Connecticut is an important center of the insurance and financial industries, largely in Hartford and in Fairfield county.
As of 2004, the population of Connecticut was 3,503,604.

In 1852, Essex became a town by itself (although called Old Saybrook until 1854 when Essex became the official name), and in 1859 the Centerbrook (lvoryton) section was added.
Henry Champlin (Champlin Square in Essex), T. Dickinson of "Witch Hazel" fame, the locally famous Williams family, Ebenezer Hayden, perhaps the wealthiest man ever to live in the lower valley, and one of the famous founders of Essex, Lieutenant William Pratt are only a few of those involved.
Essex has a unique distinction among United States towns and cities: it is one of the few that was ever attacked by a foreign power.

The implication for the history of the Connecticut valley and the mouth of the river is that commercial lumbering and associated shipping potentially predated European settlement and the fur trade.
