Terraplane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In its maiden year, the car was branded as the Essex Terraplane; in 1933 the car became simply the Terraplane until 1936 when it was brought fully into the Hudson line-up.
The Essex is generally credited with helping to make the enclosed automobile an affordable option for inexpensive automobiles.
Declining sales of the Essex, combined with the growing pressure from the effects of the Great Depression forced Hudson to replace the Essex with a re-designed automobile with a lower manufacturing cost and selling price.

 OSCN Found Document:ESSEX v. FIFE
Soon thereafter Fife demanded the return of the car from Essex, claiming that Essex had breached the terms of the contract of exchange by failure to deliver an abstract showing a clear title to the lots.
Fife, having the right to use the automobile at will and the possession of the same at the time it was taken by Essex, had the right to maintain the action in his own name.
The undisputed proof is that the trade was to be consummated by Essex delivering to Fife an abstract showing clear title to the real estate and a warranty deed conveying the same, whereupon Fife was to deliver his promissory note for $ 1,600 and the automobile to Essex.

"The Essex and Hazel Motes in Flannery O'Connor's Wise Blood" by Chris Heller
Motes's identification with and reliance upon his car as a means of escape becomes ironic as the Essex continually fails to deliver him from his demons; Hazel's dependence on his car (despite his contentions that he is not concerned with material possessions) actually holds him back.
Hazel's associations of entrapment with Christianity and automobiles prove meaningful throughout the novel as he embarks upon his own career as a "preacher" and develops a relationship with his own car.
However, Motes continually professes that the Essex is a "good car" and says that he believes that his relationship with it can serve as a reason for living: "Nobody with a good car needs to be justified" (58).
