Essex County Cricket Club is one of the 18 major county clubs which make up the English domestic cricket structure, representing the historic county of Essex.
Essex CCC is presently captained by Ronnie Irani and has a very strong limited overs team which has won the National League in both 2005 and 2006.
In the club's first championship season, James Burns scored 114 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston and this was the first-ever century for Essex in the County Championship.

Essex County Cricket Club enjoyed tremendous success in the 1980s and won county championships in 1983, 1984 and 1987.
Success continued into the 1990s, although Essex County Cricket Club finished bottom of the County Championship in 1998 and Prichard resigned as captain, however he was replaced by Nasser Hussain.

Essex were formed in January 1876 at a meeting in the Shire Hall, Brentwood, although it took almost two decades for the county to attain first-class status (in 1894) and in 1895 they were one of three new admissions to the fledgling Championship.
By 1897 Essex were good enough to finish third - the best of four consecutive top-six finishes - but it was to be another 81 years before their next top-three appearance.
