The Essex Olympian Football League Division One sits at step 7 (or level 11) of the National League System and it is a feeder to the Essex Senior Football League (which is officially step 5).
Between 1986 and 2005, the league was known as the Essex Intermediate League.
During this period, the league was renamed the Essex Intermediate League in 1986.

The first major step was made in 1970 when the Essex County FA granted Basildon United Senior status and they became one of the founder members of the Essex Senior League.
The League Cup success in 1978 completed the double, while a year later it was the Essex Senior Trophy that Basildon United would carry off.
When the Isthmian League made the decision to de-regionalise their second division, the club felt that the excess travelling and expenditure was not financially viable and so a move back to the Essex Senior League followed for the 1991-92 season.

Steady improvement was made in the Youth League and when the team became too old for youth football, in 1964, Southend Manor entered Division 5 of the Southend Borough Combination.
In season 1990/91 the Essex Senior League title was won along with the Harry Fisher Memorial Cup, while the League Cup saw us fall in the final.
In 1992/93 Southend Manor won the prestigious Essex Senior Trophy, and in 1995/96 they reached the final of the League Cup once more but were beaten by double winners Romford.

Two further seasons were spent in Division 2(north) before the decision to de-regionalise the Isthmian Second Division saw the club resign from the Isthmian League and rejoin the Essex Senior League in 1991/92.
The club quickly regrouped both on and off the field, and it wasn't long before the Senior League successes of the late seventies were emulated.
During 1997/98, Basildon United equalled Brentwood's record of three League Cup wins by beating Burnham Ramblers 1-0 in the final and it was Basildon's sixth appearance in the Essex Senior League Cup final which is also a record.

In a very hard fought and close encounter the Urchins secured the 2nd leg of the ESL treble by winning the Gordon Bradsted Trophy Final in front of 530 fans at Burnham On Crouch (most of them in red and white)The winning goal was scored by 17 year old Billy Drake in the 37th minute.
The Urchins continued in the Essex Senior League with a 2-2 draw at The Terrance McMillan Stadium in Plaistow.

The first league game was in September 1889 with a 3-1 victory at Halstead Town in the Haverhill and district football League.
The interruption of WW2 saw a dip in the Club's fortunes and after a reorganisation of the Spartan League, the Parthenon League was joined for one year in 1954-55, then the Herts County League in which the Club had no success until finishing as runners - up in the Premier Division in 1969.
The outcome was that Saffron Walden Town FC, after 12 years in the competition had to resign from the League and were effectively demoted two divisions in the pyramid when accepted into the Essex Senior League.

Jeff King, a former Canvey Island player, became manager in 1992 when the club was in the Essex Senior League.
Canvey collected 94 points at the end of the season, but even this was not good enough for the Championship as Gravesend and Northfleet kept up a fierce challenge and won the title on the last day of the season with a total of 99 points.

 Wivenhoe Town FC
Another successful period was enjoyed by the club during the early fifties and in 1952/53 they won five trophies in the shape of the Colchester and East Essex League Premier Division Championship, the League Challenge Cup, The Stopes Cup, the Wivenhoe Charity Cup and the Amos Charity Cup.
Wivenhoe went into a decline during the late fifties, but appeared to be on their way back in 1959/60 when they won the Colchester and East Essex League Division One title but, alas, it was not to be as they were relegated from the Premier Division again the following season.
The next season Wivenhoe won the Essex and Suffolk Border League Premier Division Championship and were granted Senior status, which enabled them to join the Essex Senior League.
