 Aurelius Township Michigan Early Settlement
Bullen early in 1837, and lived in the township until the fall of the same year, when he removed to the village of Jefferson, in Alaiedon township.
The first settler in the southeast part of the township was John Barnes, from Cayuga Co, N. Y., who purchased land in September, 1836, on sections 23 and 26, and settled with his family in June, 1837, half a mile east of what is now Aurelius Centre.
Johm M. French, born in Essex Co., N. J., in 1798, settled on section 31, in the township of Aurelius, April 29, 1838.

The hamlet slowly increased in importance and population by the advent of residents from the township and the opening of stores in response to the demands of the adjacent country.
The township of Stockbridge was organized as an independent township March 26, 1836, and, as decreed by an act of State Legislature, the first meeting of qualified electors was held at the house of D.T. COMFORT, April 3, 1837.
Several townships in the southern portion of the county, together with others in the counties immediately adjacent, finding the sites chosen for the holding of the annual agricultural fair remote from their various residences, formed an association for the purpose of purchasing land and erecting buildings at a more convenient point.

She is over 90 years old; is the oldest person in the township, and, although at such an advanced age, she is hale and hearty, and in possession of all her faculties, being troubled with only a slight deafness.

William Keelean was born 12 May 1872 at Barton Township in Newaygo County, State of Michigan, to parents Charles Keelan and Martha Jane Moote.
This new area was to Missaukee County of Michigan, which just a few years before was listed on census sheet as being a dense forest with very few inhabitants and traversed only by Indians and trappers.
In 1900, William was listed on the census as being twenty-eight gears of age and head of household that consisted of wife Bertha age 24, son William C. age 4, brother Frank age 16, Matthew Kelly age 20, Sheridan Stone age 33, Henry Moore age 52.
