This is true of the woods, which were previously managed by coppicing i.e by cutting the low-growing trees such as hazel to ground level on a regular cycle of ten years or so.
Essex Wildlife Trust volunteers have been coppicing for the past six years, creating the mosaic of deep shade, dense underwood and sunny clearings that you can see today.

A CONSERVATION trust that has banned hunting has become the target of furious protests by animal rights activists for ordering a cull of a booming fox population at one of its reserves.
The Essex Wildlife Trust has been under attack from animal groups and even from some of its own members since the decision to bring in a marksman to cull the foxes plaguing the 600-acre Tollesbury Wick reserve.
Mr Game and the Essex branch of the National Farmers' Union suspect that the growth in the fox population may be due to town dwellers dumping urban foxes in the countryside.

nglish Nature is delighted to be supporting the Essex Wildlife Trust in its proposed purchase of a 283 hectare arable farm on the Essex coastline.
As part of the proposed purchase of 283 hectares of arable land, the Trust plans to convert over 81 hectares back to saltmarsh and freshwater grazing marsh, benefiting Brent geese, wildfowl and wading birds.
This is called ‘managed realignment' and has been piloted at a number of sites in Essex by a series of joint projects involving English Nature, the Environment Agency, MAFF and the National Trust.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Wetland Centre, it is the newest reserve of the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust, comprising 105 acres developed from the old Thames Water Board reservoirs at Barn Elms.
To have such a wildlife refuge in the heart of London - it’s only a long stone’s throw from the Hammersmith flyover - is a tremendous achievement.
Although scrub is a valuable wildlife habitat, it does need to be kept under control in some situations.

This Essex Wildlife Trust reserve lies within the Naze public open space.
The most common sight on the reserve is that of a twitcher, waiting to catch a glimpse of a rare bird.

It was created in 1975 when a large pond was excavated close to the reservoir and a wide range of native tree and shrub species of value to wildlife were planted.
The Trust has built two further bird hides on the peninsular of farmland and grassland adjacent to the reserve, where Canada Geese and Wigeon graze in winter.
Its role is to help the public to enjoy the wildfowl spectacle on the reservoir, which is a wetland of international importance.

Essex is a county of gently rolling countryside and winding lanes.
It has England's oldest recorded town, the largest Norman Keep ever built, the largest surviving Roman gateway in Britain, a weath of fine Medieval buildings, a 1300 year old Saxon chapel, an amazing variety of churches and Dedham Vale - home of John Constable.
These sites will not work properly without it and don't offer an alternative.

Bathside Bay is now an area of inter-tidal mudflats and some `reclaimed' land which lies immediately west of the small historic port of Harwich and north of Dovercourt in Essex.
English Nature, the Environment Agency, English Heritage, the Highways Agency, Friends of the Earth, Essex Wildlife Trust, CPREssex, Marine Conservation Society and the RSPB have all made objections to the application.
The local Friends of the Earth group, Stour and Orwell Estuary Friends of the Earth, is campaigning against the development with others in a coalition under the banner of Residents Against Port Expansion.
