Esteghlal and Perspolis are presently the two most popular football clubs in Iran, however in recent years their dominance has been seriously threatened by other clubs like Sepahan and Foolad.
In the past two years it has finished 2nd or 3rd in the league, but Ghalenoei was able to get the team its first championship in the IPL in the 2005-06 season after three years as the manager.

Esteghlal Ahvaz (استقلال اهواز in Persian), is a football team based in Ahvaz, Khouzestan, Iran.
In 1973 the team was promoted to the Takhte Jamshid Cup, but league rules allowed for only one team of the same name to participate, therefore Taj Tehran, remained in the league, and Taj Ahvaz was forced to stay in the lower leagues.
The Iran-Iraq War hit Ahvaz and Khouzestan hard, and very little attention was paid to the team at that time.

KUALA LUMPUR: The AFC Executive Committee has dismissed the reinstatement appeal of Esteghlal Tehran of Iran who were disqualified from participating in the 2007 edition of the AFC Champions League two weeks ago.
Esteghlal Tehran put in an appeal last Monday but the AFC Executive Committee turned it down today after a thorough review.
The Iran Pro League defending champions were expelled from the AFC Champions League on February 16 for failing to submit their preliminary player registration forms by the February 11, 2007, deadline.

By decision of 16 February 2007, the AFC considered that Esteghlal failed to submit their preliminary player registration forms by the relevant deadline and decided to disqualify the Iranian club from the competition.
Although the AFC considers that such forms have not been received on time, the CAS has decided to grant Esteghlal’s request in order to avoid the risk of an irreparable harm if the Club is prevented to play the next matches of the AFC Champions League.
In the meantime, Esteghlal Tehran FC will be allowed to take part in the next matches of the AFC Champions League, at least until the final CAS decision.
