The departments of Matagalpa and Jinotega are important producing areas of maize, with more than 50 per cent of the national output of the first season crop (approximately 160 000 tonnes per year), and coffee, with about 70 per cent of the national production (approximately 42 000 tonnes of green coffee per year).
In the village of Estelí, in the department of Jinotega, losses of maize and bean crops are respectively estimated at about 33 and 36.5 per cent of the area planted.
The department that reported the highest number of losses is Puno, the main producing department of alpacas, llamas and sheep in the country.

Ex-Combatants Take Over Coffee Farms In Jinotega Department, 100 miles north of Managua, some 6,500 former members of the Contras and of the Nicaraguan army occupied 15 coffee farms.
The survey was done in eight departments of the country (Chinandega, Jinotega, León, Matagalpa, Managua, Estelí, Nueva Segovia and Waspam) in 6,200 homes, including communities most affected by Mitch.
On Wednesday, about 110 families were evacuated by boat and an army helicopter from the community of Cuatro Palos, near La Paz Centro in the department of Leon.

In Pantasma: From June 1-6 there was an evangelism campaign in Pantasma, department of Jinotega.
350 boys and girls were celebrating their day, because the churches in Somoto, Sébaco, El Cascabel, III Jalapa, Ducualí, Estelí and Jinotega prepared special programs that included a devotional, piñatas and snacks, among other things.

The programme aims to reduce poverty among small-scale farmers in five municipalities in the departments of Matagalpa and Jinotega through increased productivity mainly in the coffee and livestock sectors, as well as through diversification of smallholder production.
The OAS was already present in the Jinotega Department through the Program for Technical Cooperation and was able to make a quick diagnostic, provide emergency aid and present a proposal for a reconstruction project.
The program for local development (PRODEL) was started in 1994 with the aim of improving the living- and economic conditions for low-income families, especially female-headed households, living in marginal urban neighbourhoods in eight towns in central-northern Nicaragua; León, Jinotega, Chichigalpa, Chinandega, Estelí, Ocotal, Somoto and Matagalpa.

 Matagalpa
Most of the department and most of the population is east of the Pan American highway, the city of Matagalpa being the biggest population center in the north.
Matagalpa is in the mountains in North-Central Nicaragua.
Sébaco is a dustly little town when the to road to Matagalpa spolits off from Pan Am which head heads a bit west to Estelí.
