Esthero's "Wikked Lil' Grrrls" may not be the stuff of which musical revolutions are made, but it's a little rebellion all on its own.
Esthero's "Wikked Lil Girls" is original, fiery, and bubbling with pizzazz as it blends different sounds and moods into one long story of a woman's journey to find freedom to be herself.
Whereas before Esthero's ambiguous lyrics worked for her, leaving hope of wicked irony instead of vapid narcissism (see: O.G. Bitch), here her 'come-hither' stance on almost every song is so brazenly shallow that it baffles me no one could stand up and tell her: this just isn't good.

Slant Magazine - Music Review: Esthero: Wikked Lil' Grrrls
Her unique fusion of pop, trip-hop, jazz, and Brazilian bossa nova and samba—first employed with the help of producer/engineer Martin McKinney on their 1998 debut Breath From Another—was co-opted a few years later by Nelly Furtado, who brought the sound to the fore with the aid of production team Track & Field.
) While Esthero, now bearing the banner of her name as a solo artist, might strike listeners as a Nelly copycat, her long-in-the-works sophomore effort, Wikked Lil' Grrrls, displays the kind of versatility Furtado herself proudly exhibited on last year's sadly overlooked Folklore and establishes her as the progenitor of what could be called electro-ethno-pop.
She's unlikely to "start a musical revolution" or even replace "Britney on the video screen," but her music will undoubtedly be a prize for any pop fan that finds it.

Tower Records - Wikked Lil' Grrrls [Explicit Lyrics] [Digipak] * - Esthero
Much more eclectic than the trip-hop-fueled BREATH FROM ANOTHER, this 2005 album finds Esthero moving deftly from driving funk-rock (the pop-culture call-to-arms "We R in Need of a Musical Revolution") to jazzy pop ("Everyday Is a Holiday [With You]," featuring Sean Lennon) to soul-tinged hip-hop ("Gone," with rapper Cee-Lo).
Throughout the record, Esthero's bold, nuanced vocals ably carry the tunes, often calling to mind Pink, albeit with added subtlety and an even wider stylistic range.
Breaking up the mix are wonderfully relaxed Sade-like tracks, most notably "Thank Heaven 4 You," a lilting love song, and the percussion-heavy "My Torture." Although fans of earlier Esthero might be surprised by the overt dynamics of WIKKED LIL' GRRRLS, the album marks a substantial leap forward for this talented performer.
