Estremoz - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
ESTREMOZ, a town of Portugal, in the district of Evora,.
Estremoz is built at the base of a hill crowned by a large dismantled citadel; its fortifications, which in the 17th century accommodated 20,000 troops and rendered the town one of the principal defences of the frontier, are now obsolete.
There are marble quarries in the neighbourhood, and the Estremoz bilhas, red earthenware jars, are used throughout Portugal as water-holders and exported to Spain.

 Estremoz, Portugal
The little old world town of Estremoz lies 50km/31mi northeast of Évora, in the undulating landscape of the Alto Alentejo, and is particularly notable for the number of buildings made from the locally quarried white marble, which was already widely renowned in the Middle Ages.
Estremoz is also important as a center for pottery, wood carving and leatherwork, although agriculture continues to be the main occupation.
The older part of Estremoz is the upper town, with its picturesque narrow lanes clustered on the hill around the castle.

 [v*c] Portugal > Plains > Évora > Estremoz
Rising on a hilltop, Estremoz is surrounded by two sets of fortified walls: the first was built in the 13th century around the medieval upper town and a second line of fortified ramparts was constructed to protect the lower zone during the War of Restoration against Spain (1640-48).
Estremoz has many other sites of interest, such as the Convent and Church of Saint Francis (14th-18th centuries), the 16th-century church of Saint Mary or the ancient Town Hall, among other monuments, as well as the Praça Dom José I square, with a sculpted fountain at the centre of the grand Gadanha Lake.
One of its main attractions is the famous red clay pottery of Estremoz, richly decorated with patterns or floral motifs.
