Esus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Gaulish religion, Esus, Hesus or Ho ("lord", "master" or "defender") was possibly a god of agriculture, defensive war and commerce.
Worship of Esus was depicted in the Bern Commentaries as very gory, with the main rite used for redemption or for honoring him involving a sacrifice being chosen by a tribal chief, and once chosen, is taken to the altar-stones, bent backwards over the center stone, and disemboweled.
"Esus" is mentioned as being encountered in southern Gaul by Caesar's troops in the above-mentioned Pharsalia, and the Pillar of the Boatmen is put up between 14 and 37 AD (exact date determined by the inscription).

 Esus
Esus appears in the guise of a muscular woodcutter on a relief dedicated to Jupiter c.AD 14-37, rediscovered in 1711 under the choir of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.
The Esus stone itself is inscribed with his name, and beneath this is a depiction of a muscular god chopping at a branch of a willow tree.
Although Esus was worshipped in many parts of Gaul, he appears to have been the eponymous god of the Esuvii of northwest Gaul, on the English Channel, coextensive with the modern French Department of Calvados.

Esus: a Gaulish God, also known as Aisunertos, Esunertos, Aisus, Aesus, Hesus (The Respected One)
Esus is a deity known from Gaulish and North African inscriptions and iconography.
Esus' name probably represents a Romanization of an original form that was probably something like *Aisus, derived from the proto-Celtic *wesu- (excellent, noble) thus Esus' name contains the connotations of 'respect' (which masy make his name equivalent to that of the Germainc Woden/Odin — "The Respected One").
There is also the questin of why Esus is chopping or pruning the tree unless this is something to do with the death/rebirth of the tree itself, echoing the death and rebirth of the victims sacrificed to it.

ESUS, a Celtic deity of uncertain attributes, was variously identified by the Romans with Mars and with Mercury.
As a theonym Esus is unknown in Gallo-Roman writing except for a single inscription from the first century CE on the Altar of the Nautae of Paris, currently preserved at the Musée de Cluny (Corpus inscriptionum Latinarum, Berlin, 1863, vol.
Esus also shows up on a monument in Treves, although here too one cannot be sure of a sound interpretation.

French folklorist Jean Markale identifies Esus instead with a type of god--the "horrible" sky god of magic, like Odin (whose victims were also tied to a tree and flailed), Math ap Mathonwy/Gwydion (lords of magic), and Uranus.
Esus has somtimes (namely in Lucan) been written as Hesus, which has lead to some "scholars" to call him "Hu-Hesus" and identify him with Jesus and Hu Gadarn (who has his own tortured history) together, a rather silly idea.
The two known depictions of Esus are of a man cutting (pruning?) a tree, and is usually in conjunction with Tarvos Trigaranos, "The Bull and Three Cranes".

For this ESU, NMFS is proposing to amend its existing regulations to allow the same 10 limits on the application of the take prohibitions which are proposed for the chinook and steelhead ESUs described here.
The salmon and steelhead ESUs that are covered by this proposed rule have survived for thousands of years through cycles in ocean conditions and weather; therefore, NMFS has concluded that they are at risk of extinction primarily because their populations have been reduced by human ``take''.
After salmonid ESU conservation needs are met and when consistent with survival and recovery of the listed ESU, broodstock collection programs may be authorized by NMFS for secondary purposes such as to sustain tribal, recreational or other fisheries.

Under the assumption that the Deschutes River population is in a separate ESU from Upper Columbia or Snake River fish, NMFS was unable to resolve the historical extent of that ESU.

A divinity revered before and during the Roman occupation of Gaul, most of our information about him comes from the Roman author Lucan, who speaks of dark and savage human sacrifices to this woodland God.
Although a number of altars and memorial stones of Esus survive, his attributes have become mysterious and his story has more-or-less vanished.
He is often portrayed in the act of cutting willow branches, and his images often connect him with waterbirds, particularly storks or cranes.
