	Esus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		In Gaulish religion, Esus, Hesus or Ho ("lord", "master" or "defender") was possibly a god of agriculture, defensive war and commerce.
		Worship of Esus was depicted in the Bern Commentaries as very gory, with the main rite used for redemption or for honoring him involving a sacrifice being chosen by a tribal chief, and once chosen, is taken to the altar-stones, bent backwards over the center stone, and disemboweled.
		"Esus" is mentioned as being encountered in southern Gaul by Caesar's troops in the above-mentioned Pharsalia, and the Pillar of the Boatmen is put up between 14 and 37 AD (exact date determined by the inscription).

		Esus appears in the guise of a muscular woodcutter on a relief dedicated to Jupiter c.AD 14-37, rediscovered in 1711 under the choir of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

	Esus: a Gaulish God, also known as Aisunertos, Esunertos, Aisus, Aesus, Hesus (The Respected One)
		Esus is a deity known from Gaulish and North African inscriptions and iconography.
		Esus' name probably represents a Romanization of an original form that was probably something like Aisus, derived from the proto-Celtic wesu- (excellent, noble) thus Esus' name contains the connotations of 'respect' (which masy make his name equivalent to that of the Germainc Woden/Odin — "The Respected One").
		There is also the questin of why Esus is chopping or pruning the tree unless this is something to do with the death/rebirth of the tree itself, echoing the death and rebirth of the victims sacrificed to it.
