The Ottoman period, which in Esztergom lasted from 1543 to 1683, brought steady destruction for a church greatly admired by contemporaries.
He also commissioned the Renaissance Revival decoration in the interior, which marked a break from the Classicism of the architecture, and saw to the completion of the eight-columned portico, where the arms of all the archbishops involved in the construction can be seen.
Esztergom became a border town, with the establishment of Czechoslovakia after the First World War.

This is a pity because Sturovo is a mere afterthought compared to the Hungarian city Esztergom just across the Danube.
There is nothing of note in Sturovo besides cheaper prices than the Hungarian side, an outdoor public bath, striking views of Esztergom’s enormous basilica, and a pub that has as its centrepiece a luxury car with its top cut off.
Luckily, Esztergom is easy to get to: just walk across the newly constructed Maria Valeria bridge.

On September 5, he was appointed by Pope Pius XII to be Archbishop of Esztergom (and therefore primate of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary).
The Pope declared the archbishopric of Esztergom to be vacant on November 8.
His remains were returned to Hungary on May 4, 1991 and laid to rest in the crypt of Esztergom Basilica.

Esztergom was the original capital of Hungary, founded by Saint Stephen, and is still the spiritual center of Hungary (the bishop's seat is here, for instance).
From the Basilica, we wandered down to the waterfront, delighting in the tiny narrow streets of cobblestone, nuns waving to me from windows, dogs chasing and wrestling each other on the parkway lawn, and sour faced Frenchmen returning to their tour boat (jeez, lighten up guys).
I got a picture of the Esztergom Basilica as we were leaving.

Standing on the top of the hill, where there's the Esztergom basilica right behind me, I realized that every bridge has two sides.
Whereas from the Slovak side the basilica looks beautiful and that is the perfect view, the view over the Slovak side of the Danube River is not as picturesque.

The Basilica was constructed on the site of the ruined Szent Adalbert Church of the 11th century on the Castle Hill (as shown on the picture on the top of the blog) during the XIX.

The "big thing" about Esztergom is simple: it's home to the largest basilica in Hungary, and is considered the capital of Hungarian Catholicism.
Just across the Danube from Esztergom is the Slovakian city of Sturovo.
But they have a nice view across the river to Esztergom, for the basilica, being on a hill, is visible for kilometers.

The most interesting part of the Basilica historically is the Bakocz Chapel, from the early 16th century, which was incorporated when the large Basilica was built starting in 1822.
The little white church below is visible from the Basilica grounds.
