Hiroshima is a traditional center of the Chugoku region and was the seat of the Mori clan until the Battle of Sekigahara.
On November 1, 2004, the town of Etajima from Aki District merged with the towns of Nomi, Ogaki, and Okimi from Saeki District forming the city of Etajima.
Hiroshima's main industries include automobiles (Mazda is headquartered in Hiroshima Prefecture) and shipbuilding (Kure was one of the main naval bases of the Imperial Japanese Navy and remains a major commercial yard).

HIROSHIMA, Japan (Kyodo) — A U.S. patrol boat allegedly threatened a Japanese fishing boat on Jan. 5 in the Inland Sea off Etajima, Hiroshima Prefecture, leveling a gun at a fisherman onboard, leading a U.S. officer to apologize over it Friday.
The incident occurred about 13 kilometers east of an off-limits sea zone as stipulated by the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement, according to the Japan Coast Guard.
Stewart Upton, a spokesperson at Iwakuni, visited the office of a fisheries cooperative in Etajima on Friday morning to discuss the incident with the fisherman and cooperative officials.

Today while teaching for the first and last time on a Saturday, typhoon #4 passed straight through Hiroshima, but all we saw was light rain.
In Iwakuni, as everywhere in Hiroshima now, there are lots of pink sakura trees all in bloom; however, in Iwakuni there is a large traditional-style Japanese bridge and a nice little river to picnic by as well.
Tomorrow night after the party with another International Club from Shikoku (a BIG island to the south), I might head into Hiroshima, as Hiroshi wants to go to a Agematsu Mika concert (She plays a Spanish harp-like instrument, and he loves her) on Sunday in Setoda, an island far, far away.
