		During the reign of king Yervand Sakavakyats (570B.C.-560B.C.) of the Yervandouni royal house, the husband of the kings wife, Vardkes Manuk or the youngest greatly rebuild an reshaped the old Araratian city of Quarlini and renamed it in his name and honor Vardkesavan.
		The Mother Church of the Holy See of St. Etchmiadzin and the Seat of The Catholicos of All Armenians, was rebuilt and remodeled by Catholicos Komitas of Aghts.
		It was not until the early part of the XX th century that the remnants and pieces of the beautiful frescos and obelisks from the columns of interior and exterior frescos of the church were uncovered, after locating the spot of the Church of Zvartnots.

	Crosses & Mountains: Mt Agarats & Etchmiadzin
		After visiting the mountain and a great fortress on its slopes, I went to Etchmiadzin, the Headquarters of the Armenian Apostolic Church, which would celebrate its 1700 anniversary in 2001 - as the oldest official Christian church in the world.
		This is the Vatican of Armenia, where the Head of the Church, known as the Catolicos - effectively the Pope of Armenian Church - resides over the Armenian community worldwide.

	ETCHMIADZIN
		S. Etchmiadzin (the decent of the only-begotten) was built on a site associated with the conversion of Armenia to Christianity.
		The original 4th century structure, which may have been a basilica, was rebuilt in the 5th century with a different plan and with the addition of a dome.
		S. Etchmiadzin, in its plan and its association with the history of the Armenian church and people is one of the most significant architectural monuments in Armenia.

		Founded in 303 by the first Armenian Catholicos, St. Gregory the Illuminator (Lousavoritch), the church was built on the foundations of a pre-Christian temple in the city of Vagharshapat, the former name of Etchmiadzin.
		Etchmiadzin, Armenian for "The place of the descent of the only-begotten", is the seat of the Armenian Catholicos, the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
		Etchmiadzin also houses an extensive museum with relics and treasures.

	ADDRESS AT CATHEDRAL OF ETCHMIADZIN
		On Tuesday evening, 25 September, the Holy Father travelled from the airport to the Apostolic Cathedral of Etchmiadzin, where he was able to join in the ongoing ecclesial celebrations for the 1,700 years of Armenian faithfulness to Christian faith as a particular Church.
		Holy Etchmiadzin stands as the great symbol of Armenia’s faith in the only-begotten Son of God who came down from heaven, who died to redeem us from sin, and whose resurrection inaugurates the new heavens and the new earth.
		For all Armenians, Etchmiadzin remains the pledge of perseverance in that faith, despite the suffering and bloodshed past and present, which your troubled history has made the price of your fidelity.

	St.Leon Armenian Church - Fair Lawn, New Jersey, United States
		Meaning "where the only-begotten descended", Etchmiadzin was established as the Mother See in 303 AD shortly after Armenia's conversion to Christianity in 301 AD (making it the first state to officially adopt Christianity as the national religion).
