  Etemenanki (The Tower of Babel)
The Etemenanki was next to the Esagila, and this means that the temple tower was erected at the center of the world, as the axis of the universe.
The Etemenanki is mentioned for the first time in the Annals of the Assyrian king Sennacherib, who claims that he destroyed the temple tower of his Babylonian enemies in 689 BCE.
Arabian authors were responsible for keeping the memory of the Etemenanki alive, sometimes comparing the greatness of the ancient city with the humble town Bâbil of their own age.

Example of an extensive and massive ziggurat is the Marduk ziggurat, or Etemenanki, of ancient Babylon.
Etemenanki, the name for the structure is Sumerian and means "The Foundation of Heaven and Earth." Most likely being built by Hammurabi, the ziggurat's core was found to have contained the remains of earlier ziggurats and structures.
These structures were called Etemenanki by the Sumerians, meaning "The Foundation of Heaven and Earth." The earliest examples of ziggurats date from the end of the third millennium BC and the latest date from the 6th century BC.

Archaeological evidence has shown that the Etemenanki, one of the chief temples of Marduk, was indeed the Biblical Tower of Babel.
Marduk was the chief god of the Babylonian pantheon and was believed to descend to the top of this tower every new year to copulate with the young priestess which was sent up there.
Since the tallest buildings in the rest of the city of Babylon were no more than three stories, Etemenanki was clearly visible against the outline of the city.

The Links between Etemenanki and Ba'al Zebul? - Above Top Secret Conspiracy Community
So far [at least from what I have searched] their has been no major findings of when it was actually built although it is placed before the reign of Hammurabi (1792-1750 BC) and from the maps I have looked at would be roughly classified as the same region the word Ba’al Zebul came from.
The reason I link it up to the Etemenanki, is because the Temple prior to Hammurabi seems to have existed.
Enuma Elish seems to imply that the Etemenanki was there before the Temple of Esaggila was built.
