Lacuna Inc., the memory-erasure outfit that furnishes the premise of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, would be of obvious benefit to movie critics.
In Eternal Sunshine, Jim Carrey dials himself down to the ground as Joel Barish, a near-anonymous drone (the script barely specifies what he does for a living) who discovers that his ex-girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet), has visited Lacuna and had all her memories of Joel swept away clean.
Eternal Sunshine's stylistic primitivism works in accord with the script's sophistication, as if the very film itself, like Joel's memories, were about to tremble and fade away.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
But it's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind that completes Kaufman's emergence into an emotional world with what is essentially an ode to one of my favourite ideas and phrases: the madness of love in a temporary world.
Performed with restraint and an affecting weariness by Carrey, and with warmth and dizzy energy by Winslet, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a picture of career performances bolstered by stark, mellifluous imagery.
Its supporting cast to a member deadly true in their roles (Dunst's recent impolitic declaration that she would have made a better Sylvia Plath than Gwyneth Paltrow is borne out by her character's own dark transformation), the picture is a cascade of thoughts that rejects traditional narratives while holding fast to recognizable strictures of storytelling.

The operation simultaneously releases Sunshine from the confines of reality, encouraging Kaufman and director Michel Gondry (who previously worked with Kaufman on Adaptation and Human Nature) to be as creative as they wish without the burden of having to make excuses for wandering too far from the straight path.
Of course, Joel’s memories of his lost love improve with each revelation, though we’re never sure whether these are accurate interpretations of their early relationship or affectionate recreations Joel keeps in his head.
Either way, the comatose Joel changes his mind (literally) mid-session and wants to hold on to his fondest Clementine memories –; which means he has to somehow outrun the scientific process.

Frustrated by the idea of still being in love with a woman who doesn't remember their time together, Joel agrees to undergo the procedure as well, to erase his memories of Clementine.
The film, which takes place mostly within Joel's mind, follows his memories of Clementine backwards in time as each recent memory is replaced, and the procedure then goes on to the previous one, which is likewise seen, and then erased.

'Eternal Sunshine' is beautiful on so many levels, it really is difficult to know where to start: from the wintry visuals of Michael Gondry's direction to the genuinely touching relationship portrayed by Carrey and Winslet, this film shows that it's still possible to make a heart-warming romantic comedy without having it sickeningly saccharine.
With this film, Gondry has shown that, like Spike Jonze and David Fincher before him, he's a music video director whose talents travel wonderfully to the big screen, and 'Eternal Sunshine...' is certainly a film you won't want to forget.
