Gödel, Escher, Bach - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid (commonly GEB) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Douglas Hofstadter, published in 1979 by Basic Books.
A new preface by Hofstadter accompanied an otherwise unchanged 20th anniversary edition (ISBN 0465026567) released in 1999.
For instance, in Chinese, the subtitle is not a translation of an Eternal Golden Braid, but a seemingly unrelated (and nonsense) phrase Jí Yì Bì (集异璧, literally "collection of exotic jade") which turns out homophonic with GEB.

Rick McGuire "Quilt Nerd": An Eternal Golden Braid
Ken and Cindy wanted to learn how to do braid quilts (one of Anne’s specialties), Pat was working on a pinwheel quilt, Azureen did a bunch of little projects, including making some quilted purses, and Emerald went off and did a project of her own invention, with amazing results.
She did not arrive until Friday afternoon, but she had Susan deliver a piece of graph paper with a diagram of a braid variation and the notation “For Rick to make”.
This was interesting, but it created a bit of separation between the braid units that sort of lost the braid effect.

Twenty years after it topped the bestseller charts, Douglas R Hofstadter's Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid is still something of a marvel.
Besides being a profound and entertaining meditation on human thought and creativity, this book looks at the surprising points of contact between the music of Bach, the artwork of Escher, and the mathematics of Gödel. It also looks at the prospects for computers and artificial intelligence (AI) for mimicking human thought.

The Eternal Golden Braid is that all of the brilliant men named in the title have explored and conquered what Hofstadter calls Strange Loops.
Each chapter was titled after a style of music employed by Bach and would feature applicable Escher prints and I will take the word of the many smart math varmints that the math equally incorporated Godel's contributions.
Taken together they maintained the Eternal Golden Braid through chapters like "Sonata for Unaccompanied Achilles" where the idea of figure and ground is depicted with an Escher print of fl and white fantastic creatures intertwined so each forms the outline of it's neighbors.

“EGB's greatest accomplishment is to show that the austere and frigid world of pure mathematics is by no means as remote from the two worlds of art and music as the humanist in the street believes it to be.
Hofstader guides his uninitiated reader through level after level of the mathematical funhouse, not only explaining its layout but also conveying a sense of the wonder and the beauty that do, in fact, reside there.

The Math Topics for the first unit will be an introduction to the triangle in general, and the so-called Egyptian triangle, contained in the great pyramid.
Since the Egyptian triangle contains the golden ratio, we'll introduce the ideas of ratio and proportion here, and for squaring of the circle, we must be able to find perimeters and areas of the square and the circle.
In this course we hope to trace just two strands of his eternal golden braid, art (and architecture) and math, and sometimes connect them with strands from literature, mythology, and religion.

Probably that would lead to the golden age for the science of consciousness, by allowing the simultaneous collection of really specific and informative third-person data (at the neural level) and first-person data (via verbal report).
In the philosophy of consciousness, progress is more incremental, and issues are hardly ever settled once and for all.

At the core of "Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid" is Douglas Hofstadter's attempt to describe the self, and how self can manifest itself from the underlying inanimate matter.
A question that that has been the subject of discussion and research by historians, mathematicians, physicists, biologists, computer scientists, theologists and philosophers and that has been addressed in many papers, theories, research projects and books, is addressed by Hofstadter using Strange Loops and Tangled Hierarchies.

Anyway, the point is: at the very least, you need to at least try to eliminate the most plausible competing interpretations of the data before you move on to try to use happiness data to mount your favorite policy hobby horse.
