Marvel Universe Encyclopedia Article, Definition, History, Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Unlike DC Comics, who uses the idea that interference with time by villains caused reality to reboot a few times, Marvel simply assumes that the stories happen in the space of years instead of decades; this is known as a sliding timescale.
Marvel's major heroes (the ones who get involved in most of the important events) are the ones created from 1961 to 1963, during Marvel's "Silver Age": Spider-Man, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, Thor, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s director, Nick Fury.
Note that in Marvel Comics, the concept of a continuity is not the same as "dimension" or "universe"; for example, characters like Mephisto and Dormammu hail from alternate dimensions and the Celestials from another universe, but they all nevertheless belong to Earth-616.

 A Brief Introduction
Captain Marvel, on the other hand, was not only human (the editors tagged him "The World's Mightiest Mortal", perhaps in a slap at the Kryptonian), he was a kid in a man's body, thanks to an old wizard and a magic word.
From the very beginning, Captain Marvel's chief artist was the man most identified with him throughout his career, C.C. Beck, a grand and wonderful cartoonist whose style was perfect for the character, somehow capturing exactly the essence of the boy inside the man which was fundamental to Cap's innocence and naïve lack of sophistication.
All the other Marvel stories were told in the more simplistic, cartoony style of Beck, Costanza, and Shaffenberger; Junior had his adventures illustrated by Raboy, one of the finest realistic artists in comics history.

Super Hero Tarot - Marvel Comics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Unlike the DC Tarot, where I reinterpreted not only the imagery of the tarot but also it's internal logic, the Marvel tarot is no more than a correlation between characters and the cards of a "standard" deck.
Perhaps it is the two decades that Marvel lacks that keeps it from becoming modern mythology as DC has.
Or maybe it is Marvel's willingness, even as it tells mundane tales, to explore their character's more mystical qualities that makes it unneccessary to reinterpret them into occult imagery, unlike the more scientific heroes of DC.

Unlike a lot of comic book deaths (and all the cliches that go along with that term), Phoenix's was referred back to by the characters, and actually had some long-term effect on the path of the comic book.
Despite the claims from Marvel that the Dark Phoenix story still had all its emotional strength and punch because the Phoenix duplicated the emotions and thoughts of Jean Grey and had even convinced itself that it was Jean Grey, it just doesn't hold up under even casual scrutiny.

Transformation Stories List:Comics - Lycanthropy, Shapechanging Magic, Nanotechnology, Shapeshifters...
Note: A character having a "secret identity" is not enough to qualify the comic as a transformation work (mostly because if it were, half the comics in creation would be listed, and what's the point of that?) In general, transformation should be a significant theme of the comic in order to list it here.
The comic is a gritty look at how someone might try to actually put a life together after something like that.

And its Action Comics was the first to feature a superhero — Superman, who quickly became the first hit character to emerge from the fledgling comic book medium, and the first character to star in his own regularly-published comic book.
A couple of decades back, Marvel Comics, riding high on its 1960s innovations, overtook DC in comics market share — but recently, the "other" half of comics' Big Two has surged back and re-taken the lead.
DC Comics may or may not be the "Comics Publisher of the Century" — but considering its size, its staying power and its corporate connections, it's certainly one of the century's biggest successes in comics.

Marvel's unlikely to step in and explain how it arrived at its numbers, an act that would after all call further attention to the fact that they need to juggle bullshit numbers to hide their second place status, but Laura's theory does sound plausible.

The thing that made the idea so compelling in the comic book field, however, was that the Marvel world's concept of the mutant had no single real-life counterpart, and no limit of real-life analogs.
For Marvel purposes, a mutant is a being who possesses a genetic structure not present in his parents.
