By breaking up an etext into cards of a fixed length (eventually standardized at 80 characters, a convention that was carried over to CRTs), punchcards made error correction trivial-- you simply retyped the relevant cards.
Programmers created the first significant body of etexts because their programs were created *as* text files (called 'source code') that were then automatically translated into machine language.

EText Reader is a simple cross-platform GUI EText reader utilizing the wxWindows GUI library.
to be able read EText's using the font and color selection I like and to keep track of the current reading position within the text and allow making bookmarks to be able to reference specific portions of the text later.

There is also no time spent publishing the document, once it's in etext (electronic text) form it can be gotten almost instantly.
On the other hand the cheapest possible paper copy of the book would be $5 because of the cost of printing, and printing would also delay it's availability to the public.
The process is far from streamlined - a conservative estimate is that it takes 50 hours to get any etext selected, entered, proofread, edited, copyright searched and analyzed, etc. However, when one considers these etexts may reach as many as one million people by the year 2001, the value of their work is immense.
