Ethan Allen Brown, Ohio's seventh governor, was born in Connecticut on July 4, 1776.
Brown traveled west in 1803 to lay claim to a tract of land that his father wished to invest in, located near the Ohio River in Indiana.
Over time, Brown became known as the "Father of the Ohio Canals," although his critics referred to the canal project as "Brown's folly." He remained a staunch advocate of canals long after his time as governor was over.

Ethan’s father, Joseph Allen, was born October 14th, 1708, the son of Samuel Allen and his wife, Mercy Wright, and grandson of Nehemiah Allen, who moved from Windsor, Connecticut, with his mother, Ann Allen, widow of Samuel, to North Hampton, Massachusetts.
Ethan was the fourth generation from Samuel Allen of Windsor and Northhampton, and Dr. Allen the fifth.
Allen continued in the lead in the activities of the war until the 24th of September, 1775, when he and thirty-eight of his men were captured in an ill-advised attack on Montreal.

This circumstance, the injudicious movements of Colonel Ethan Allen and Major Brown, who were recruiting south of the St. Lawrence, and the insubordination and mutinous spirit displayed by the Connecticut and New York troops, prolonged the siege.

While undertaking a siege of St. Johns, Montgomery sent Ethan Allen and Major John Brown ahead with separate detachments to recruit Canadian volunteers.
Allen and Brown did manage to recruit some Canadians and, meeting together, conceived a risky plan for a converging attack on Montreal by two forces totaling about 300 men.
On the night of 24-25 September, Allen with 110 men crossed the St. Lawrence north of the town but was left to fend for himself when Brown failed to meet him.

The owners of the house span from Ethan Allen Brown (once governor of Ohio), to his older brother, David (for whom the house is named), to the Russell Smiths (who in the 1970s rediscovered and restored the log cabin), to present owner Jim Wilson.

Allen demanded surrender from the British commander "in the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress." Subsequently, as a member of the army of General Philip John Schuyler, he rendered valuable service in the American military expedition against Canada.
Some of the Green Mountain Boys preferred to stick with Ethan Allen and were captured along with Allen in August 1775 in a bungled attack on the city of Montreal.
