Talk:Acetaldehyde - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ethanal is an alternative name for the same compound, but acetaldehyde is preferred.
If supporters of the name ethanal are adamant the article must change, I would very much encourage them to visit the WikiProject on Chemicals and make their views known there, rather than continually reverting this article.
If you consider ethanal to be part of the system and acetaldehyde not, then IUPAC are saying "ignore the system for a moment, we have decided acetaldehyde is to be used".

 Chem-Energy : : Welcome to home page
Acetaldehyde, also called Ethanal (CH3CHO), is an aldehyde used as a starting material in the synthesis of acetic acid, n-butyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, and other chemical compounds.
It is manufactured by the oxidation of ethyl alcohol and by the catalytic hydration of acetylene (in Germany).
The most important and the simplest examples are methanal (formaldehyde), HCOH, and ethanal (acetaldehyde), CH 3 CHO.(In systematic chemical nomenclature, aldehyde names end with the suffix -al).

 Preparation of ethanal
Directly the solution enters the hot acid in the flask a vigorous reaction occurs, and a mixture of ethanal and water containing a little ethanoic acid distils over.
Rapid addition would lead to a large amount of oxidising agent being present in the reaction mixture and therefore significant oxidation of the ethanal produced to ethanoic acid.
It is not possible to prevent oxidation of ethanal completely, since it is easily oxidised.

Up at the SAE competition last May in Pontiac, some of the British teams complained about their fuel lines degrading and then clogging after using some of the gas provided.
The gas tanker on the side (I think) said something along the lines, "May Contain up to 10% ethanal." It was only a problem for the forigen guys, non of the local people complained.
I know this is a far cry from pure ethanal but I just wanted to put my two cents in.

nucleophilic addition - carbonyl compounds and hydrogen cyanide
There is no reason why you can't do that if it makes the appearance of the mechanism easier to follow.
The reason for the formation of equal amounts of two isomers lies in the way the ethanal gets attacked.
Ethanal is a planar molecule, and attack by a cyanide ion will either be from above the plane of the molecule, or from below.

 Results and discussion
The quantum efficiency for the production of HCO from ethanal at 308 nm has been measured to be 0.95 [22], from which we estimate a concentration of nascent HCO radicals of 4.78
Experiments in which the forward pump and probe beams are cross-polarised so that only a polarisation grating can be formed are currently being set-up.
In conclusion we have observed resonant degenerate four wave mixing spectra of the HCO radical produced via the 308 nm photolysis of ethanal.

Alcoholic beverage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It has been suggested that alcoholic impurities (congeners) are the cause of hangovers.
However, it is more likely that they are caused by ethanal, a toxic breakdown intermediate naturally produced by the liver as the alcohol is metabolized.
Alcoholic beverages with a concentration of more than 50% ethanol by volume (100 proof) are flammable liquids and easily ignited.
