L29. Destruction of Ethane in Corona Discharge: Experiment and Modeling
Ethane has ionization energy lower than that of molecular oxygen, therefore it was expected that the destruction of ethane would be similar to the destruction of the majority of hydrocarbons (this expectation was confirmed in the current experiments).
Mixtures of ethane and Zero Air (12, 109, 1033 and 10000 ppm) were passed through the reactor with the flow rates of 0.17 – 4.8 sccs.
At the highest ethane concentration used (1%) the discrepancy between the predicted and observed efficiencies of destruction is ca.

ChemViz Torsional Rotation of the Ethane Molecule Lab
Ethane is the simplest hydrocarbon possessing two distinct conformations: the eclipsed and the staggered form.
The eclipsed and staggered forms of ethane are interconvertible by rotation of one carbon atom with respect to the other around the bond that connects them.
Starting with the eclipsed form of ethane, determine the location of the hydrogen atoms at rotational angles of 0, 45, 90, 135, 180, 225, 270, 315 and 360 degrees.

Ethane, a colourless, odourless, gaseous hydrocarbon (compound of hydrogen and carbon), belonging to the paraffin series; its chemical formula is C2H6.
The industrial importance of ethane is based upon the ease with which it may be converted to ethylene (C2H4) and hydrogen by pyrolysis, or cracking, when passed through hot tubes.
Unlike propane, liquid ethane is not in common use as an industrial or domestic fuel.

Additionally, about 10% of the ethane feedstock is lost as it is deposited on reactor walls as coke (carbon), resulting in frequent shutdowns.
Ethane is a fuel gas, much like the natural gas burned in homes for heating and cooking.
This 36% yield represents a practical barrier that is never reached for the ODH of propane and rarely exceeded for the ODH of ethylene.

The cloud may be the clue needed in solving a puzzle that has confounded scientists who so far have seen little evidence of a veil of ethane clouds and surface liquids originally thought extensive enough to cover the entire surface of Titan with a 300-meter-deep ocean.
Ethane dissolves in methane, which scientists predict is raining from the atmosphere at the north pole during its cool winter.
If ethane was produced at today's rate over Titan's entire lifetime, a total of two kilometers of ethane would have precipitated over the poles.

SPACE.com -- Frozen Ethane Found on Pluto
Ethane, a substance prized on Earth as a component of natural gas, may have even greater significance on Pluto, where it could provide clues to the evolution of the early solar system.
Indeed, the ethane ice may be a remnant of the vast gas cloud that collapsed some 4.5 billion years ago to become the sun and planets.
The ethane is dissolved in a bed of nitrogen ice that covers much of Pluto's surface at a temperature of -387 degrees F (-233 degrees C).

Ethane, which is comprised of two methyl groups attached to each other, has properties very similar to those of methane.
The staggered conformation is the most stable of all possible conformations of ethane, since the angles between C-H bonds on the front and rear carbons are maximized at 60 degrees.
At room temperature, ethane molecules have enough energy to be in a constant state of rotation.

Conclusions: Exhaled ethane is elevated in patients with ILD and is correlated with the clinical outcome, suggesting that it provides useful information about ongoing oxidative stress, and thereby disease activity and severity in ILD.

Cassini's VIMS Detects Vast Polar Ethane Cloud on Titan - Planetary News | The Planetary Society
The missing ethane is all the more mysterious because Cassini images suggest that other less abundant solid precipitates from the photochemical reactions in Titan's atmosphere have formed dunes and covered craters on its surface, Griffith said.
VIMS made the first detection of Titan's vast polar ethane cloud when it probed Titan's high northern latitudes on Cassini flybys in December 2004, August 2005, and September 2005.
VIMS detected the cirrus cloud as a bright band at altitudes from between 30 km and 60 km at the edge of Titan's arctic circle, between 51 degrees and 69 degrees north latitude.

Given the lack of evidence for such seas, the missing hydrocarbon reservoir was expected to reside entirely beneath the surface, until NASA's Cassini spacecraft radar found lakes in Titan's north arctic latitudes on a flyby last 22 July.

TPS: Mucky Seas and Hazy Skies: An Ethane Ocean on Titan?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
As the ethane gas is produced from methane high in Titan's atmosphere, it condenses, falling out as rain or mist over geologic time (the rate of raingall would be too slow to detect over a period less than, say, ten thousand years).
As ethane vapors rise from the ocean, they condense, but the amount of condensing gas is so small that it hardly affectrs the temperature gradient; hence Voyager would have measured the same temperature gradient over the ethane ocean as over dry land.
One imagines a cycle in which methane evaporates from the ocean, rises to the upper atmosphere where it is converted to ethane, which then condenses and drops to the ocean surface.

In Titan's atmosphere, ethane should be an inevitable chemical byproduct of methane being struck by sunlight and by electrons zapped loose by Saturn's magnetic field.
Given ethane clouds, there should be ethane rain and a lots of liquid ethane, nearly 1,000 feet deep, covering Titan, according to the authors.
At least finding the ethane clouds at all "is reassuring, in that it validates the basic ideas we have about Titan's meteorology and chemistry," says F. Michael Flasar of NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center, in a commentary accompanying the study.

For example in ethane, the rotation of one methyl group relative to the other. The angle of rotation is called a dihedral angle, and it is represented by a Greek theta symbol.
Since the different structures which are generated by this rotation are all very similar (they have the same number and kind of bonds) and are very easily interconverted, they are not referred to as isomers but as different conformations of the same molecule.
This kind of analysis is useful for estimating the torsional strain present in other, more complex, molecules, as we shall see and in understanding the ground state structures and shapes of molecules, which we call conformational analysis.

Formulations and methods of use of 2,2'-dithio-bis-ethane sulfonate - Patent 5902610
The method of claim 9 wherein the effective amount of 2,2'-dithiobis ethane sulfonate or the pharmaceutically acceptable salt is administered to the patient in combination with the therapeutic dose of cisplatin and a therapeutically effective amount of a second anticancer agent.
For example, formulation of cisplatin with sodium thiosulfate or 2-mercapto ethane sulfonate (mesna) is impractical because of the chemical quenching of cisplatin with the sulfur anion or the sulfhydryl moiety of thiosulfate and mesna, respectively.
Therefore, the uses of 2-mercapto ethane sulfonate as a protective agent against oxazaphosphorine and chloroethylating agent associated toxicities are entirely different from the protective uses of 2,2'-dithio-bis-ethane sulfonate in the present invention.

They didn’t find the lakes and oceans of ethane they were expecting, but now they have found a large cloud of ethane above Titan’s southern pole.
It’s possible that this cloud rains down ethane in the summer, and then condenses around the pole in the winter, accumulating as ice.
Griffith is first author on the article, “Evidence for a Polar Ethane Cloud on Titan,”; published in the current (Sept.15) issue of Science.
